Anyone know a good self-catering place near Lake Garda?

We ARE going to Lake Garda next year! It's been decided! We haven't managed to get back to Italy since having dcs for various reasons, so 08 is the year!

We'll be taking DD (then almost 5yr) and DS (then almost 3yr) and would love to find a cottage/house/home from home out there, but can only find apartments for rent online. Has anyone found or stayed in a similar property in that area recently? We don't mind whereabouts on Lake Garda, we just know we'd like to be in that area of Northern Italy as there's loads to offer (honeymooned in Verona an LOVED it!)

Thanks everyone!

Can't help but bumping for you as I'd love to know too.

This looks nice but it only has 1 bedroom. There were a few more in the Lake Garda area but a lot more expensive and loads more in the surrounding areas.

Hey TeeJaye, this looks wonderful! Definitely have a good look at the others too, as we'd ideally like two beds.

Thanks guys!

do you not fancy the campsites? They would ahve facilities for your LOs and would probably give you a bigger choice!

Camping Life had a gorgeous looking site on lake maggiore, looked lovely and quite and on shores of lake. We priced it and it was £680 for the 4 of us in a chalet style 'house'for last 2 weeks in Aug. not inc flights/car. It wasn't n their website last time I checked but it is in their 08 brochure. Might be worth considering, then you'd get a pool etc and there would be other kids around for yours to play with while you sip wine and watch dh cook tea on the bbq!

We have just been to Lake Garda and stayed in Gardone Riviera and I cannot recommend the place we stayed in highly enough.
FAB ACCOM, FAB AREA, FAB POOL (with baby and adult pool), FAB FAB FAB!
Here is the link

i think i am right they are all 2 bedroom apartments. 1 is a proper room the other a loft above the sitting room/kitchen
Have fun!

hi balancing act, think I've left a message for you on another thread about this but can't find it.. I'm looking for lake garda for next august too, you recommendation looks fab - what is the town like? We are thinking of going in august, I've heard that the traffic round certain parts of the lake can be terrible, did you have any problems getting around?

finally one more thing to pick your brain with! Which airport would you recommend? I'm in that awkward position of trying to book accommodation without the flights having come on sale yet....

Thanks!

Hi Gatleygirl,
The area was really really nice. It had that old fashion glamour feel to it - and the place we stayed was so new and the facilities were great it was really nice to have the combination. From what i understand, Riva Del Garda (right at the top of the lake, maybe another 2 hours from Gardone, which is this area) and Sirmione are the ones that are quite touristy and could be hellish during peak periods. Everyone is so friendly, even my son who is 1 1/2 and 200% testosterone was welcomed in the restaurants for dinner - unlike in some places where you feel they think your kids are ruining the ambience!
Other pluses of the area we stayed in: 1) they would do some basic groceries for you - eggs, milk, water, bread, cheese, coffee etc. - and just give you receip. they leave it at your doorstep at c7 am! 2) they also do a continental breakfast if you want - i think for 10 euros a head 3) they did our laundry (a big sack) for 15 euros (no ironing) and they really smelled lovely in the end). 4) there is an internet computer at the reception - which is handy.
We had no problems getting around, we had a rented renault megane.
As for airports, we flew to milan linate, which was not ideal. Brescia is the closest but only ryanair flies there - and Verona is also closer than Milan. We did a day trip to Verona as well from Lake Garda (parking our car in Desenzano - (free) - then taking a 20 minute train to the centre of Verona). I would choose to fly to Verona next time more than Milan. From Milan, it took us about 2 hours (maybe a bit more?) to get to Lake Garda.
Have fun, we will definitely be back.

by "other places" i meant other countries. Everywhere we went in Italy the children were very welcome (even in the restaurants that were more formal)
Other towns well worth visiting are Salo, Desenzano.

Thanks very much! I'll have to have to start looking around for flights tonight when all the kids are in bed - at the mo DD (3) wants me to play with her handbags! i feel slightly mad trying to book so far in advance that not many flight schedules are on yet, but every year by the time we finally get around to sorting anything out all the best stuff is gone - new resolution is to be more organised!

I think we'd go for verona though even though bresica looks nearer and cheaper as I just can't stand the thought of flying with Ryanair again!
