France holidays 2020 - are they completely off the cars do you think?

We are complete Francophiles and have spent every summer in the past ten exploring the length and breadth of France.

DH would love to go this year - late August.

Do you think there is any chance it will be open to Brits by then or am I just being silly?

Does anyone have any ideas if not France - it would have to be a cheap one like camping as I've lost my job. But determined to have at least a cheap holiday somewhere.

France is open now.

At the moment they are saying that visitors from the UK will have to quarantine for 14 days - this will change if the UK revokes its absurd quarantine rules.

But the French quarantine is entirely voluntary and is not being enforced or monitored.

Bars and restaurants are open - with certain restrictions re social distancing and masks.

A lot of the attractions local to us are also re-opening - with appropriate social distancing.

We went out for a drink in a bar and a pizza in a restaurant on Saturday - things seemed pretty normal. Many of the residents around here rely on the summer tourist income for their livelihood and I am sure it is the same for many areas of the country.

I would imagine that you would be very welcome.

you'd need to quarantine for 14 days when you come home too, under current rules. But as the rules seem to be changing day by day, and as the dreaded second spike is not yet out of the question, who knows?!

I thought France has now said that we won't have to quarantine going in - though at the moment still need to quarantine coming back.

We're due to go about 20th August (driving down then self-catering on a campsite although not under canvas) and I haven't lost hope yet. This was the one year we booked really early! Fingers crossed.........

I know someone who is from the UK and is in the South of France on 3 weeks' Tennis holiday at present. A lot of places are open already.

We booked our summer 2020 holiday last year which includes a few days in France and are still planning to go. Hopefully in the next few weeks the FCO will lift travel restrictions to some European countries including France and I imagine that the quarantine might be ditched for those countries at the same time.

If you are on a budget I would recommend looking at the French Alps as there is a lot of high end self catering accommodation available in summer at a fraction of the winter ski prices. There are some lovely swimming lakes. We have previously been on some summer holidays with Peak retreats and their prices include a ferry crossing.

Oooh, I'm so excited now!! I had hoped this was the case but half expected to get completely shot down.

I'm going to hit Google.

Oh crap. DH just found out that as a member of SLT, he is expected to be in all summer to deliver summer school. So unfair, he has already worked harder than ever coordinating all the alternative exam result submissions, timetabling, recruitment, etc etc. He's exhausted.

But no summer holiday he thinks.

@Cloudspotter is this England? Our Local Authority have told us there are no plans as yet about how Summer Schools will work and they believe it will not involve schools...

Cloudspotter · 15/06/2020 19:39

Don't know. Hopefully it's just speculation. Sad

We’re proceeding with France travel for this summer unless the borders close again. It’s all self driving and self catering, so I’m thinking our risk will be minimal.

Cloudspotter · 23/06/2020 20:16

The problem is the 14 day quarantine on return though.

Unfortunately as dh is a public servant, we couldn't get around that.

Still, good to know that if they lift the 14 day quarantine, we will be straight on a plane!

We just booked Eurotunnel for end August. We have got a holiday place there and we are really looking forward to it.
Quarantine will be over early July I’ll bet.
Our caretakers are telling us our area has zero cases people being careful out and about bars Restaurants and cafes open.
We will stay local get our friends and neighbours around for a catch-up outdoors as it should be lovely weather then.
