Due to travel with Tui in 4 weeks... are they ever going to cancel it!?

How long will we have to wait!? Their advice has been for a while now they've cancelled holidays upto 11th June. We are due to fly to Majorca on 17th June.
We paid in full and it wasnt cheap, it cost us £2800 and we could do with the money back as DH has been furloughed till at least July.
We only have 2 weeks left to amend it otherwise we lose the holiday. However I dont want to amend it we just need a refund. Do I hold my nerve and expect it will get cancelled soon? Or is there a chance they wont? I'm so confused. We 100%, cannot go due to the 14 day quarantine both ends of the airports!

What has your insurance company said? Government is advising against all but essential travel, and this isn't essential. So what are they offering you?

Hmmmmminteresting · 14/05/2020 21:47

Burpalot is it our travel insurance company I should be speaking to then as opposed to Tui? I didnt actually realise this as everything I have read has been about Tui refunding (or not in most instances) the holiday. We do have insurance, I'm not sure if they'd talk to me just over a month out though? Do you think it's worth trying them over Tui
Thank you

Yes, I would call my insurance company. Theyll at least tell you what the score is. Right now I'd argue they should refund. They might argue otherwise if gov advice changes by the time you're due to travel. Where you going?

DropZoneOne · 14/05/2020 21:52

As long as FCO advice is not to travel, you won't be going. That advice is indefinite currently, however your holiday is still 4 weeks away. TUI will have thousands of bookings to work through, i understand your concern, but be patient. I'd expect it to be cancelled 2-3 weeks before your travel date. Not because they are being difficult, simply due to volumes of bookings vs available staff. No travel company is set up to handle this volume of cancellations and refunds, especially ones that usually have the majority of their holidays booked and serviced online.

Burpalot · 14/05/2020 21:53

Ok just googled. 'the FCO advises British nationals against all but essential international travel'. A holiday is not essential travel. Call your insurance and ask them for a refund

Hmmmmminteresting · 14/05/2020 21:57

I've just looked at my insurance website. It says they will only cover me if i have it in writing from Tui that they wont refund me? Tui i am sure wont do this!

You will have to be patient, give it another couple of weeks. Once TUI cancel, they will refund you under UK Package Travel Regulations. At the moment, I am sure they are still working on holidays up to 11 June before looking to extend it further.

Usual guidelines are that if FCO restrictions are still in place 3 weeks before your departure date, your holiday will be cancelled.

TUI emailed about three weeks before I was due to fly. On The day I was due to fly, they sent me the code to use to reorder the flight.

Does that help?

mothtoaflame · 14/05/2020 22:11

Not much help, but Tui have been awful to deal with. They are still taking payments for holidays they know won't go ahead. It's impossible to reach them by phone and none of their emails are working. I received a refund of £6k today for a holiday that was cancelled on 20th March and I've not received a single call or email from them in that time. If they do cancel you'll be offered a credit voucher but holidays next year are already more than 30% more expensive. There is a Tui complaints Facebook page that I found helpful. I would hold your nerve but be prepared for a long wait for a refund.

Oldbutstillgotit · 14/05/2020 22:15

I assume it is a package holiday ? DH and I were due to travel on 21/5 for a 2 week package holiday to Spain . Email received 6/5 cancelling . Refund voucher to be issued within 4 weeks but cash refund can be requested if preferred .

Hmmmmminteresting · 14/05/2020 23:02

Yes it's a package holiday. The part that's bothering me is that theyve said we can only amend up till 31st may. After that we use it or lose it. If FCO advice changes and we can travel again, 3 weeks before our holiday will only allow us around 2 days to amend. But as others have pointed out when we did try to amend the holiday it was coming up at £800 extra. I will hold my nerve I'm just really bothered we will be forced to take it.

I have 1 other option - i have received a shielding letter for my 2yo. After speaking to his paediatrician he is currently in the process of getting a reversal letter sent pu8t but could I maybe use that? Is that even legal?!

Please, please try not to stress about this at the moment. I work for a UK tour operator, usually my job is negotiating rates and offers with hotels. Since March 17th, I have been processing cancellations and refunds (not taking calls, the system sends an email and we just action the booking). I have seen so many bookings where people have called up to ask what their options are (nothing, holiday still going ahead) and a week later the booking is cancelled.

I really don't see FCO advice being lifted by 17 June. Early July at best to those countries who have it under control and who will let us in!

If you haven't heard in 10 days, then give them a call based on the shielding letter and see whether they'll help based on that. I suspect though, they'll simply offer you to move it to next year rather than agree a refund. They only have to give a refund once they've cancelled it.

Hmmmmminteresting · 15/05/2020 08:32

Dropzoneone thank you (and to everyone else too) for the advice. Thats reassuring to hear. I will keep waiting and hope for the best!
Have looked forward to this holiday for the best part of a year, cant believe I'm now so keen to have it cancelled :-(

We were due to fly next week on a package holiday with Virgin and decided to hold out for a refund. It was quite stressful as they’re still running some scheduled flights and we wondered if they’d say that if the plane was flying then it was up to us if we were on it or not but they finally cancelled it last week.
Now for the long wait for the refund.

MadisonAvenue · 15/05/2020 09:11

And yes, we’d been so looking forward to our holiday and it felt so strange to then desperately want it to be cancelled 🙁

ManualFlusherSnot · 15/05/2020 09:28

We’re supposed to be travelling to Greece with tui on the 16th June.
We have chosen not to reschedule due to prices increasing, also due to the fact that we don’t know if ourselves or other countries will have second waves in the coming months/years.

It is quite annoying that they haven’t just cancelled our holiday yet, but I believe it will definitely have to be cancelled. So I’m just holding on and waiting to hear.

okiedokieme · 15/05/2020 09:40

You need to look at it from both sides, yes it's a lot of money to you but they are a business who is teetering on the brink of collapse due to coronavirus. They will cancel holidays if the fco advises against travel, at the moment that is through the 11 June but is being extended periodically. The government haven't put an end date on travel advice because they are not only waiting on what is happening here but also the EU - eg France has indicated travel is possible from July to campsites and gites, my friends own one and have been told it's fine to take bookings from the U.K.

Hold on for now, it's not quick and they will pressure you to take a change of date but that is because they are trying to stay afloat.

The on-line schedules etc aren't helping people's stress levels ATM.

Until there's a massive change/clarification in the international situation the reality is lots of the Long Haul flights scheduled to be operated by Virgin, BA and others that appear to be "running" will either be cancelled close into the departure date or will operate freight only.

DropZoneOne · 28/05/2020 19:36

@Hmmmmminteresting

Have you seen TUI has extended cancellations to 30 June today?
