Runner · 08/10/2004 13:46

In my haste, have offered to write an article for local NCT magazine as am due to be travelling with a 14 month old soon to Oz so thought would need to look into anyway! Be v.grateful for any tips / advice as to how early can travel with a baby/ any useful weblinks I can mention / tackling the plane journey & pressure on the ears / anything you think would help.

Thanks for your help.

Do you know the babygoes2 website?

steppemum · 08/10/2004 17:07

I can remember posting on at least 2 old threads about when to travel with a new born etc, so would it be worth doing a search through the archieves? There have also been lots of threads on travelling with toddlers (there was a huge one with loads of advice for someone who had to go to NZ in a hurry, sorry, can't remember her name) The only problem you might have is that there is a lot of contradictory advice around!

Lonely Planet do a useful book, 'Travel With Children'. Best advice I ever received was take with you some emergency toys--bubbles, balloons, crayons, paper etc...which you can pull out in the event of delays.

get them sucking on you or bottle or what ever they like for the ascent or descent.
Try and fly as close to their nap/bed time as possible
Take stickers and new toys, and what ever they have been nagging you for recently.
Get the other passengers on your side, smile and say hello and make contact before you take off that way if child kicks up and makes a noise they will be less likely to tut and make things hard for you.
Take lots of cartons of juice.

You should travel with a baby only after he has had all his jabs. Babies are EASY.
Always ask for the bulkhead seat and get a bassinet, even if you know your child won't sleep in it, you can store all your stuff in it

Go Singapore or Malaysian, they really really are the best, cabin crew the personification of consideration.

As to getting used to the timezones, we always fly to Perth and Stop in Singapore for at least 24 hours because it is the same timezone. Don't know about the eastern states.

ANd finally my top tip, and I have done it both ways with a baby and toddler twice and one way with toddler and baby ... expect the worst. That way the sheer relief will perk you all up if things go well.

It really isn't all that bad. IME it's the faffing about at heathrow for two hours before check in that is the really draining part.

I wrote an article last year for Singapore Airlines on travelling with baby - will try and dig it up for you (DH has been clearing up stuff on computer so not too sure where it is!) - CAT me if you want it.

cheers

Thxs for all the tips - gratefully received. Yep am trying to work on the basis of expecting the worst and just maybe being presently surprised! Fat chance! Got to be done and will all be worthwhile once we get out there. Pam70 if you do come across your aticle would be great. Thanks again for all the threads/ websites.

suzywong,
you don't need to wait until the baby has had jabs!

My top tip is to be scrupulous about washing your and the baby's hands after being in the toilets.

highlander · 29/11/2004 16:20

of the aircraft, that is.........
