Defo the Peak. Get the Funicular (but only one way, tis boring twice). Nathan Road and Stanley Market are also excellent. 2 days, ummm... you have to get the Star Ferry between the Kowloon side and the HK side - there's a good arts centre on the Kowloon side.

Here's a map with popular sites on it.

I'm off there in November, but will be mostly shopping

Thanks again. Great map and ideas. getting quite excited now!

Just need to sort hotel now!

Agree with the peak and stanley market. There's a nice beach at Repulse Bay on the way back from the market if you want a break. Oh, and there are 2 buses to get to Repulse Bay. One goes through the tunnel to get there, the other goes over the top of the mountains. Great views from the top - a trip in itself, just for the fare of a bus ride. Someone else might be able to fill you in on the bus number to take.

tigerschick · 14/09/2007 16:32

The bus that is best to get from Central to Stanley is the number 6 - there are others but the #6 is the iconic one. I'd certainly recommend getting off in Repulse Bay for a paddle (but then I'm biased having lived there) then you can either get a bus to Stanley (most of them go there - but do check as not all do) or a taxi.
Something else that is pretty typical HK is to go down the Temple Street Night Market. I did this as a child but it depends on your dds as to whether you think it will be appropriate. If you are staying on the Island then one idea is to get the MTR (underground) to Temple Street (I think tho you'd better check this) and go down the night market then either walk or get a taxi back to Star Ferry and get the ferry across in the dark - you get those famous sky-line views for next to nothing!
The thing to remember is that it is a tiny place so you can do lots in one day. It depends on where else you are going. There is a botanical garden in HK but the one in Singapore is, I think, better so if you are going there then I'd give the HK one a miss - unless you really like tropical plants.
I'll have a think - aware this is very long

Cheers, will look into that.

Of course there is Disneyland there now - if that's your thing!

batey · 14/09/2007 16:36

Sorry Tigerschick, posts crossed. Repulse Bay sounds good, despite the name! Is it easy to get cabs from there then? We will be there early April, any clues as to what the weather will be like?

Check out the weather. When I was there the humidity was so high. When are you going?

bbc weather

WotsZePoint · 14/09/2007 16:42

x post - april !

tigerschick · 14/09/2007 16:44

Repulse bay is named after the HMS Repluse - don't know what that was named after tho! It's Chinese name is Tchin Soy Wan Which means shallow water bay - the next bay is called Deep Water Bay in English and Chinese.
Taxis are easy to get - you can either go to a rank or just flag them down in the street. They have a light on top if they are free.
Weather-wise it will probably be warm, but not hot, and can be wet. I'd go with lightish summer clothes and an umbrella - but it is the start of the better weather so you might be lucky and not get rained on at all. Last time I was there was March 05 and I don't think it rained at all. Most things are just as much fun in the rain but it can be misty so be aware for a visit to the Peak is better if it is clear.

BTW am to the tips of my toes!!

Oh - please excuse my psuedo-Chinese phonetic spelling.

hotpotmama · 14/09/2007 16:46

Go for afternoon tea at the Peninsula hotel - its fab!

dejags · 14/09/2007 16:48

check out this fab accom website for fabulous deals. we had two nights in the Harbour Plaza. Fully equipped for self catering (great for those with kids), one bedroom apartment with a pullout sofa in the lounge. All for a paltry 70quid a night.

Wow, MN comes up trumps again!
