Holidays
Where are you going to go when this is all over?
Linguaphile · 30/03/2020 15:39
So far we have lost out on 3 holidays from this. :( To cheer ourselves up, the kids and I have been trying to decide where we want to go on a big long haul trip once it is safe to travel again. So far we’ve had requests for India, Japan, a SE Asia trip and a safari. We’ll have saved a ton from doing absolutely nothing in the isolation months, so we want to go for something really fun. Might as well use the down time to get planning, hey? 😎
What is the dream holiday you would like to take when this is all over??

Probably nowhere long distance for quite a long time. Not due to fear of coronavirus but because I'm realising more and more that we need to slow down and enjoy what we have closer to home and give the planet a break.

Yep - we need to slow down and enjoy what we have closer to home and give the planet a break.

We've moved most of our holidays as we didn't need the money refunded. We're glamping for a few days at the end of July and then have a French road trip at the end of August. October is the Florida holiday that we've moved from April and then next April we're off to the Galapagos (hopefully, unless we get a resurgence!).
We've also got a week in the Scilly Isles banked, which we'll probably do in August 2021.
Having something to look forward to is keeping me going.

Well we will be flat broke due to the lockdown so nowhere but...
We are missing out on a couple of music festivals, several gigs and a long camping weekend with friends. If we could afford it, we would spend the money seeing the bands we will miss and camping with mates. I'm really hoping that people don't go back to their normal patterns of behaviour. One of the true unintended positives of this is the environmental impact. No hopping on planes at an idle whim is a good thing for this planet. Long may it continue.

I just started coach yo 5k and was pondering the Disneyworld marathon as a goal ROFL

For me,I'm going appreciate the UK alot more and have no desire to go abroad.
GreenTulips · 31/03/2020 09:38
I won’t be going anywhere either.
I think the airlines will hugely increase fairs to recuperate their losses. Even if the porter countries pulse hotels etc make things dirt cheap to attract Brits abroad.

I’m not denying flying has an environmental impact but at 2/3 % of Global carbon emissions, as individuals we would make a far bigger contribution by cutting down or out our use of cars (and changing the type of cars we drive), using green energy sources, insulating our houses properly, buying far less clothes (and recycling the ones we have) and importantly not consuming cheap meat from industrially farmed animals.
Over the last 2 years, ‘we’re not flying this year as it’s bad for the planet’ has been a lot more commonplace and from my experience, a lot of it coming from people I know who are doing bugger all else other than the weekly recycle to change their environmental footprint. None of us are free from hypocrisy in this regard but from the individuals I know, not flying isn’t really more than well meant virtue signalling. Nor are the considerable environmental impacts of not travelling taken into consideration - what adverse affect this will have on habitats and wildlife currently protected by the tourist dollar. Just to make this clear, I’m not implying the PP are merely virtue signalling re their decisions not to fly, I don’t know them and their personal commitment to changing their own environmental footprint from Adam, no direct offence meant honestly, I’m referring rather to individuals I know!
Back to the OP and off the environmental topic, no travel planned at all this year - depending on what happens we may have a last minute U.K. break. Depending on my job situation though, it would be nice to have a big holiday next year (off the top of my head, SE Asia, Argentina or California).
(As a quick disclaimer, I really don’t claim to be doing all I can environmentally. I don’t eat meat, I don’t drive, I recycle & upcycle & use green energy sources but god knows, sure we could do a lot more & I do like to travel!)

We still have Majorca booked for July and Florida for October at the moment but I’m not convinced either will go ahead. We will have to wait and see.
Hopefully we’ll get away in 2021.
KoalasandRabbit · 09/04/2020 23:28
We had a trip to Borneo, Thailand and Perhentians planned for August this year, we won't be going nor will DD be going on her Italy school trip planned for June.
I don't think we will travel pre a widespread vaccine so maybe next summer. We may get offered credit vouchers on flights and they are with Asian airlines so if a vaccine is available by next summer Asia but a simpler holiday than had planned, maybe just Borneo. If no vaccine then will probably stick to UK as I don't think insurers are covering it.

The UK sounds lovely at the moment but wait until the weather changes, the M5 is blocked and then we will all want to travel abroad. At the moment I would be happy camping in the New Forest. But two years ago we had to come home early because it did not stop raining.

Ha I want to get as far away from the UK, this certainly hasn't made me appreciate the UK more, it's made me feel trapped.
We have Florida and Kos booked over the next 18 months, Florida has to move, so we are looking to reconfigure them to see if we can still do both this year and next but fully expecting Florida to have to be pushed to 2022 if we can't move kos to this year.
Not very original ideas sorry, we love the US so alternate between European package holidays for sun and relaxation and busy US holidays. Well that's the plan...
