Generally speaking... when is the cheapest time to fly from Australia (Melbourne area) to the U.K.? U.K. summer time if possible.

Thankyou

Don't the likes of Kayak have price trend graphs and forecasters?

We never have the luxury as we have to travel at Christmas and the prices are always Shock then.

Bubblemonkey · 21/02/2020 18:49

I’m shite at trying to find pricing, I’ll have a look there though. Thankyou

In reverse (uk to oz) i think the cheapest time was may-ish when i last looked, maybe try then?

Lots of variables ... Rough guess would be to avoid European school summer hols (i.e. travel ? May or early June), but there will also be variability between days of the week...midweek travel tends to be cheaper but it’s hard to guess.

It’s even more difficult to predict ATM because of the Coronavirus problem. You’d expect to see prices drop because passenger numbers are down on some routes through the Far East (e.g Singapore) but some airlines are now reducing capacity on those same routes to justify maintaining prices.

Don’t know about kayak but you could try doing some “dummy bookings” with suitable airlines.

According to skyscanner - could book reasonable flights for £607? 23hrs 10 one way, 24hrs the other. One stop. Hoping to get my best friend over for my eventual wedding, don’t have a specific date in mind... just curious for when it’ll not cost her an arm & leg on plane tickets.

To someone that usually travels close to Christmas, that is an incredibly cheap price.

notimagain · 22/02/2020 09:39

As you say Christmas and the period around it gets really ugly when it comes to demand and therefore fares.

Short term it’s probably being driven by the time of year and just possibly airlines starting to chase passengers.

.. FWIW/out of interest I’ve just looked at a U.K./OZ two sector return trip. With a U.K. airline for May/June there are sub £650 return fares available.

Fares start to ramp up quite steeply in July - see previous comment about U.K./European school summer holidays.

Flights arriving midweek are cheapest. Under 700 is a pretty good price.

Early June before the schools break for our Winter holiday would be a good time, prices go way up in the holidays. The price you mention sounds like Air China or Air Asia to me, not airlines I would personally want to fly with at any time tbh. but I am picky and always want to go via Singapore as I like a few days stopover which limits the options. Emirates and Etihed often have good sales for flights to Europe, one of them was doing flights from $1,450 return recently. Singapore Airlines are fantastic but expensive. I used to go to Europe regularly in September and got good prices (and it’s a nice time to get married 😊).

Sorry, I might be confusing the issue here since I priced in sterling and was doing the dummy booking from the U.K. Nevertheless the £650 return I came up with was using with a major European carrier, 2 sectors, routing via Singapore.

SnowsInWater · 25/02/2020 23:32

@notmeagain that is a very good price if you can do it return from Aus. It is so frustrating that you can often fly return UK-Aus so much cheaper than Aus-UK. We didn’t realise that until after we emigrated 😂

Pythonesque · 25/02/2020 23:40

Agree they may not be able to get as good a fare from Australia as we can for the other direction. Traditionally I think there was low season, shoulder and peak season. There are two main peaks around the UK summer and over Christmas, with shoulder periods either side where the fares change dramatically. September can be a good option, but agree May/June likely to suit your needs better.
