Holiday Routine

Off to Tenerife on Friday with Dh and DS (15months). Ds is in a good routine and always in bed by 7.30/8.00 pm every night.Obviously when we're on holiday we'll be going out and eating later therefore he won't be going to bed till later. People who I've spoken to who've done this tell me that the kids just adapt to the different times and it's no problem - let their kids sleep in the pram when they're out. I'm worried though that is going to play havoc with what he's used to and really upset him - If we have to be back at the hotel every night for 7.30pm, I don't mind. I just wondered what everyone else's experiences were.

Have taken DS (2) abroad twice this year for a week at a time. Both times he was happy to be out and about in the evenings and let us know when he was ready for sleep, at which time he curled up in his buggy and stayed there until we went back to the hotel. When we went home, we had no problem getting him back into the routine, so I would just say enjoy your holiday!

I love Tenerife, where abouts are you going?

Thanks Overtiredmum. Staying at the Bitacora Hotel. It's just on the edge of PDLA, near Los Crisianos. Looking forward to it but bit nervous as it's first holiday with ds.

You'll be fine. This age is still pretty flexible. just keep an eye on him and listen to the signals he gives you. enjoy the holiday.

We wnet away in June with ds who was 23 months, and last year went to canada when he was 13 months. This year, he stayed up a bit later each night, sometimes fell asleep in his buggy, then we would just lift him in to his cot. Last year he did change a bit, mostly due to time differences etc but it's amazing how they revert so quickly when you get home, like they were never away, as if they see their own bed and think "aaahhh", don't worry it will be fine. Plus if he's up later at night chances are you'll get a sleep in the next morning!

We took dd to Majorca at the same age. We would go for a walk at what was her normal bedtime and by the time we'd chosen a bar to sit in she was asleep, and would remain so until we got back to the room and put her in her cot.

Thanks ladies, you've reassured me

Were your kids ok with eating later?

I have never been able to get my dd to sleep in her pram, so on holidays when we ate later we ended up going to bed late and she woke later. Had to give her a morning nap if up early (15mths) and would then last until about 1430 before getting tired again. When she was very small (6mths) she still never slept in her pram so we had to resort to shifts of going back to the room for her sleeps. I would try eating out every other night where possible and in on the other nights to avoid overtiredness. Unless lo sleeps in pram, in which case it will be fine. Top tip take dvd case with portable DVD player for entertainment on nights in.

We're taking DVD player Tori - dh and I are taking series 5 of ER, so a night on the balcony with a few beers might not be so bad

Oh yeah, forgot we always took dd out in her nice pj's instead of clothes and with a blanket incase it got cold and incase she slept in the pram, so we could just lift her into the cot when we got in.
