Campsites in Germany- with lake / river?

We stayed in a fabulous French site last year (la ribeyre). Looking for a change this year and flights are pretty cheap to Munich. I was wondering if there are any campsite recommendations for South Germany? Or any 'chains' of sites we could check out, equivilant to the French huttopia or sunelia companies. Would love a similar set up to the French sites - so pool or lake with canoeing etc.

I can’t help you with campsites in Germany, but we’ve been to two in Austria and they’re both about 2 hours from Munich. Natterer See is probably the best for watersports. Sportcamp Woferlgut has an amazing pool complex and spa, but also has a lake which you can swim in too.

Haven't been camping in the area but Tegernsee is lovely & not to far from Munich. Plenty to see and do for all the family.

You can have camp fires (buy wood from the owners) and barbeque, and there's a pub on site.

There's also a train station walking distance away.

It's an island with rivers on both sides accessed by a bridge. It's fairly basic in the sense it's certainly not the sort of place that has entertainment though. There's a very small playground. You can rent canoes in the local area.

this place is bigger - lots of activities especially for children, and a swimming lake, and it's ten minutes from Legoland. Dh has been there with our younger kids whilst I was elsewhere with the eldest, I haven't been myself but the kids loved it.

There aren't the kind of chains of big all singing, all dancing campsites in southern Germany. There are lots of lovely options but all tend to be family run and often vaguely based around a farm.

You could also look at tree houses instead of tents, especially if you don't want to take your own tent (the glamping with ready pitched tents is pretty rare). This one is on a tiny lake/ big pond with 3 canoes to use for free and is attached to big a "Go Ape" type climbing forest Parcour thing. It's very nice - terrace by the pond to sit out with a bottle of wine, fancy breakfast buffet, walking distance to large village with some shops and restaurants but you need a hire car from Munich - it's about an hour's drive, no train station nearby, not enough to do within walking distance apart from the climbing forest and mini golf, and it's moderately expensive compared to actually camping: baumhaushotel-oberbayern.de/

There are lots of tree house hotels in Germany.

Bavarian families who want the French type big chain campsites with three pools and kids club usually go to Italy or Croatia. Lake Garda is very popular with families from the Munich area and easily drivable. Obviously if lake Garda was your destination from the UK it'd make more sense to fly to Verona though!

We used the Cool Camping website and book to find some great sites in Germany, France and the Netherlands.

The Staffelsee might be worth a look: www.murnau.de/en/campinggrounds.html
