So our family doesn't really do holidays and trips. We've never been able to afford it. However we saved and booked a hotel for two nights in York this coming weekend for me DH and the kids to go to the Viking festival. Everything is paid for. but the weather has been terrible recently with flooding in York and the surrounding areas and more expected. What do I do? We have never travelled north before and don't know the area. I assumed we would probably need park at a park and ride car park somewhere or a long stay car park but some car parks have been closed (although I have no idea which ones and where they are). What would you do and how would you go about it? Are there particular websites or anything I can look up the situation? Obviously this is the closest to a family holiday we've ever had which is quite sad considering DS is 11 and DD is 7 so we don't want to miss out especially if it means not getting any money back but I also don't want to end up stranded somewhere. It's turning into a massive stress. Help!

Call the hotel. Speak to them .

Park and Ride at Rawcliffe Bar or Monks Cross will both be fine. They're a good way out of the town centre (15ish mins on the bus). The river has good flood defences and should be ok. I have been there when the river has been in flood and its 90% business as usual anyway. Enjoy your trip and try not to worry, its a brilliant city and you'll have a great time

Does your hotel have a car park? Youth is not a huge city and there aren't congestion charges. Most hotels will have parking facilities or will let you know of nearby ones. I don't imagine you'd have to do park and ride

DanceItOut · 17/02/2020 20:43

Oh good that's definitely made me feel better. I will call the hotel tomorrow for peace of mind.

I do park and ride because its easier than driving in and a lot of the hotels don't have their own parking or do at an extortionate charge! There is plenty of parking in the city too though, I'm just cheap!

ClashCityRocker · 17/02/2020 20:46

Which hotel? Maybe we can suggest parking nearby or best park and ride?

The river has peaked and flood defences have held. I believe some of the viking activities have been moved to the mansion House but York is very much open for business.

Funf · 17/02/2020 20:48

Just ask the hotel if they have parking and how much compared to the park and ride, its a nice city I hope you enjoy it.
Some of the evening ghost walks are suitable for kids and great fun

Flooding in the centre of York rarely affects much other than pubs and houses very close to the river. Askham Bar park and ride would be fine but I’m sure you can park in the city. Enjoy York it’s lovely!

attatiti · 17/02/2020 20:52

Unless it has changed recently, you can’t park overnight in the park & ride car parks.

Kateplaysrugbyinmydreams · 17/02/2020 20:55

Oh bless you! The news makes it look so bad. A couple of small car parks by the river are closed. Everything else is basically fine. Lots to do and no issues at all. Where are you staying?

attatiti · 17/02/2020 21:35

The old Askham Bar P&R carpark (now called Moor Lane) allows overnight parking and is quite cheap. It’s close to the new one, so you could walk up to it and use the P&R bus.

We are staying at the holiday Inn express. So nothing fancy which is why I just assumed no parking would be available. I'm so relieved to hear it's pretty much business as usual. My local town flooded in 2014 and it was absolute pandemonium for nearly a week as the town center is basically in a valley.

York floods super regularly, like maybe at least once a year. It’s not a big deal here.
If it’s the Holiday Inn near Monks Cross I’m sure it will have parking, but as PP said just ring the hotel and check with them.

@DanceItOut If I'm looking at the correct hotel (Malton Road) it's surrounded by a fairly large car park and also the hotel website talks about free parking.
