Travel insurance - cancellation

So my husband is very sick with a tummy bug and we are due to travel to America tomorrow . I’ve phoned Dr who advised not to travel and will provide sickline.

From looking at my travel insurance it appears that we should be covered.

We have booked the various components separately eg transatlantic flights/ internal flights and hotels. Some of these allow free cancellation, one hotel is allowing us to change to a later date, one hotel is non refundable and internal flights will incur loss.

What I’m unsure about is whether I should cancel everything and claim on insurance or whether I should reschedule the components that I can and only claim the non refundable parts. Our airline was booked with airmiles so I can reschedule easily to next month. Rescheduling would mean I don’t lose all the money and could travel next month, rather than waiting on insurance to pay out. Has anyone any experience of this? TIA

yes, although a long time ago and different circumstances. Insurers like it when you minimise their loss. However the first thing to do is call their claim line, tell them what is going on and get their advice.

sorry about the holiday and hope your husband feels better soon.

Hi, I was wondering what the outcome was in the end? I have a similar situation with child who has chicken pox and we fly in 3 days....

Depends on terms and conditions of your insurance - would read the small print and call them if any questions.

With my insurers I have to try and get the money back first and I think that includes the non-refundable as well. This seems to suggest they will consider alternative solutions if it reduces the bill for them - obviously this is coronavirus so a bit different but gives an idea and seems basically if it saves them money they are likely to agree but you really need to check yours:
