Insuring a holiday advice needed

Hello, I've booked and paid for a holiday for my mum. It was very expensive and I'd like to get the amount insured.

The thing is, I booked her holiday and flights in her name but I paid for the holiday from my accounts and it is registered at my address.

How do I go about insuring just the holiday amount as I don't want to insure my mums health too as she's got copd and various other health complaints that I don't want to foot the bill for

TIA

What are you wanting to insure against? I'm not sure that it is possible for you to insure someone else's holiday. I don't suppose you paid by credit card? That would provide some cover, depending on what event you are concerned about.

Normally, your mum would take out travel insurance, which she needs to declare her health conditions for it to be valid. The policy would include other events, depending on the wording of the policy.

Does your mum have travel insurance? If not, is she willing/able to pay for what could be expensive insurance in case she is ill while abroad?

Is the holiday abroad? She’ll need travel insurance if that’s the case and that will cover cancellation. The most likely cause of cancellation is for health reasons so if you were to buy cancellation insurance you’d need to declare the health conditions anyway.
There are quite a few companies who cover existing health conditions. I used Boots insurance last year. I was able to declare everything online. Was quite straightforward.

Your mum will need to sort out her own travel insurance really. Presumably in the event of a cancellation, she'd pass the sum returned on to you.

It might not be as expensive as you think to cover her illnesses anyway. I know when I've helped older relatives sort these kinds of thing out, it's never been hugely more expensive than my own policy.

You can’t exclude health conditions. That’s a highly likely reason for not being able to go!

You'd have to ask each possible company if they wouid insure just the bits you want to insure.

But of course that leaves you totally out of pocket if unlucky timing means she is unwell and cannot travel. It could leave you/her very out her health deteriorates whilst awaymand extended stay, repatriation and medical costs (even if at EHIC rates)

I would get a more comprehensive insurance, with all her health conditions covered. The increased premium might be less than you think. Have you actually had any quotes done?

You need to buy travel insurance for your Mum. Make sure you declare all medical conditions and do it now so if your Mum breaks a leg tomorrow and can no longer go you can get the money back. She will have to apply for it herself as she will have to sign that she has declared everything truthfully. Use a price comparison site to find the best deal, always read the small print, the cheapest policy isn't always the best deal.

Agree with all the above. If you’ve paid by credit card, you’ll have a good level of protection for covering the cost paid for the holiday - but not any medical bills if she’s ill abroad (which would be likely to be very expensive). Whether you take it out in her name or she does it herself, she will need comprehensive insurance where all medical conditions have been declared (if not, it does invalidate the insurance). My DH has various conditions and I usually buy his insurance separately as his comes out more expensive. Use a good comparison site (medical travel compared.co.uk) to look at the options and read the small print. With airlines going bust, good Scheduled Airline Failure cover is an essential as well so check out how robust that is too!

Thanks for all your replies. Yes she is intending on getting her own insurance. I'm hoping that in the event of her having to make a claim she would return the amount to me. My concern is that as I paid for her holiday, would the insurance pay her for cancellation

Yes, they would. It's her holiday she's insuring, not your card transaction.

They probably would, but your DM would then just give you the money back, or do you not trust her to do that?

I think if you do claim, they send the money by bank transfer, so if she did claim, she could just submit your bank account details.
