Thailand with DS22

Am hoping to take DS22 on an active/adventure trip @ Easter (I've been to Thailand with DH but that was shopping/fly & flop) Does anyone have suggestions for locations or companies - maybe where he'd meet other young people so he's not 'stuck' with me the whole time, where there's lots to do? He's doing other trips with his mates this year, but I've sort of tempted him with this as it's very different from the usual 'lads holiday' and it's all free of course)

Are you planning on staying in one place? Islands or mainland? Mix of both?

cardy1969 · 30/01/2020 09:38

G adventures, do great organised tours. You can do a week (or a specific number of days) touring then add in your own locations e.g Bangkok, Thai island etc.

Thanks for replies - sorry, just seen them... will check out the adventure company... planning to go to 2 or 3 places I think...

Sounds lovely. But not sure I would book that right now until I knew how the Coronavirus was evolving. Thailand is not exactly far from China. But aside from that I think a trip to several places in Thailand with some activities sounds fab.

Chiang Mai used to have lots if adventurous stuff going on ; I expect it still does. We went many years ago (pre Internet)- just turned up, looked around and booked what we fancied when we were there.

KoalasandRabbit · 30/01/2020 20:44

Not sure if a 22 year old DS would like this or not - we are staying by River Kwai there's a few hotels around there with activities - we are at Home Phutoey which has a zipline, canoeing, swimming, pedal boats, hot springs etc on site and you can do other activities close by like longboats, bamboo rafting, canoeing in River Kwai, waterfalls, WWII things. Not a drinking / clubbing location and WIFI is limited. They are in a group of hotels and there's a few with different activities.

Our other locations are in Borneo and Perhentians Islands so not other Thai stops apart from Bangkok - we stay in Haven't Met there, that looks quite young and trendy but only a small pool there, would need to go out but can walk to things.

Thanks for replies all... some great sounding stuff there... Yes with the WHO decision tonight, seems sensible to hold off booking anything until the situation hopefully improves/stabilises...

If you need to find another destination Costa Rica has lots of adventure / action like very high ziplines through rainforest, whitewater rafting, kayaking, jungle treking etc as well as lots of wildlife. But hopefully things will improve before Easter. We've booked for August but does look a bit dicey as to whether insurance would pay out if need to cancel though would imagine it will be more under control by then.

Mother87 · 30/01/2020 23:33

Thanks koala will have a look at Costa Rica as a back up plan...

This is the one we stayed at in Costa Rica, it is lively though:

www.riu.com/en/hotel/costa-rica/guanacaste/hotel-riu-guanacaste/

It has fair amount on site pool, beach, windsurfing, kayaks, SUP, entertainment at night, beach volleyball, there was rainforest around it and monkeys, gecko, raccoons, coati at hotel grounds. Next door at Diamante there is at 60mph zipline about 300 metres in the air and lots of wild animals. Loads of trips from there too to see rainforest, volcanoes, sloths etc. Its AI so activities are included. It is loud and there are some young people drinking in pool area but they can be avoided or joined if you are 22! Grin We booked via TUI. Food was very good especially the steakhouse restaurant which has waiter service and visiting raccoons. Quite a few people on here have been to Costa Rica so if you want somewhere more civilised just ask on here. My kids love the lively and lots to do and wildlife. Beach is a bit wild but fine, more for sports than sunbathing.

Oh yes, we went to Costa Rica a few years ago. We combined it with Panama which is also good for adventure stuff. We did some diving there.

Mother87 · 31/01/2020 09:23

Thanks to both of you - never considered it before but will have a good lookGrin

This is Diamante: diamanteecoadventurepark.com/
And this is one we did as a day trip: water slide through jungle, active volcano by there, ziplining through jungle could see monkeys and toucans as you went on it, horserding and hot springs

Lots of these places around Costa Rica though check safety record these are fine and the well known ones are fine AFAIK) - Arenal and Monteverde are quite well known. We went to Arenal too though that's further.

If you're considering potentially switching from Thailand to Costa Rica - I would recommend G Adventures. I went a couple of years ago - group size was 12 I think - ages ranged from early 20's, me (40) to mid-60's. The accommodation was decent (not luxury) - think 3 star

Am in Costa Rica right now lolling around a pool!
It would be great for your trip I think.
Loads of very friendly people on the trips so easy to feel part of the fun.
We booked it all ourselves and it's been very easy
Happy to provide more details if you'd like

Mother87 · 06/02/2020 23:31

Kiddingmyfatself 1 - sounds lovely... where are you & is there plenty of stuff to do?

Ooh, how exciting. My (by then) 22 yr old dd and I were hoping to do this...... just following for ideas. Smile

Anyone know what is the best time of year - or indeed if there is a time of year that is good to avoid ?

KoalasandRabbit · 09/02/2020 12:02

Hope you have a lovely time wherever you go. Costa Rica was amazing, we went in August which is their rainy season but was still 27C each day and sunny with just some rain after 4pm each day.
