Suggestions for less obvious european city breaks

We've been to a few European capitals, but fancy going somewhere less obvious this year. Any suggestions please.

We'll be staying four nights so needs to be enough to do. I like river/lakes, but a really nice view might work instead. We like pottering, shopping, architecture, history, walks, eating out, so think easy to please.

Stockholm is stunning and spread out over an archipelago of pretty islands. Lots to do and see, lovely metro system and scenic boat trips galore.

Tallinn

MrsDoubtTried · 19/01/2020 12:35

Stockholm is the loveliest city.

Kelsoooo · 19/01/2020 12:38

Slovenia?
Istanbul?

CountFosco · 19/01/2020 17:03

We went to Stockholm for our honeymoon, it was fab. Delicious food, fabulous boat trips (Drottningholm was a particular highlight but we loved Gripsholms slott as well) and fabulous museums, the Vasa was one of the most fascinating museums I've ever been to, but we loved Skansen and the Abba museum as well.

Istanbul?

Not sure it counts as a less obvious destination though, it's one of Europes great historical cities. It's top of my list of places I've not been to and desperately want to go to though.

Smidge001 · 19/01/2020 17:21

I'm in Stockholm right now, and it's lovely.

I've been to Tallin and really liked it, but I'd definitely struggle to fill 4 days! However, we stayed in Helsinki and then did a day trip to tallinn by ferry which was great.

I've only heard good things about Lyon, and had it on my list for this year - what made you think it was so bad madeyemoodysmum? I'm worried now that I should avoid.

Bordeaux is wonderful

Dubrovnik? Anyone recommend?

midwest · 19/01/2020 19:12

I found a morning enough to be honest, it is drowning in cruise ships and feels like a lovely film set.
But I'm glad I've seen it.
We hired a car an travelled in Bosnia and Montenegro during the same week.

neverornow · 19/01/2020 20:13

@dementedma I absolutely loved Dubrovnik
Not cheap but a beautiful city.

dementedma · 19/01/2020 20:14

Hmm, still not decided.....will keep searching. Thanks for the comments

mrsnec · 20/01/2020 10:00

If you can't decide I'd look at flights too. I often decide where to go on a short break based on prices and most convenient flight times from my local airport.

Lightsabre · 20/01/2020 10:05

Jordan? EasyJet fly there and it's not a king flight. Petra is a once in a lifetime sight!

Lightsabre · 20/01/2020 10:05

Not a long flight that should read!

Pajamagirl · 20/01/2020 10:17

Copenhagen , not an unusual destination but compact young and vibrant city . Quite expensive tho

Hoppinggreen · 20/01/2020 10:18

gollygumdrops · 20/01/2020 10:43

Sarajevo
Ljubljana

Malaga. We go every year and I love it as much as Barcelona, except it's smaller. And I lived in the latter for 2 years.

caperplips · 20/01/2020 15:34

We have enjoyed:
Lyon
Krakow
Arezzo
Gdansk
Budapest
Prague

And we're planning Tallinn this summer with a ferry trip to Helsinki

caperplips · 20/01/2020 15:35

Oh! Loved Ghent too with a day trip to Bruges, but off season
Also Florence

dementedma · 20/01/2020 22:29

We love Krakow and have been several times. Not so keen on Gdańsk, found a week too long there.
Tempted by Warsaw. We like Poland!
Good idea to look at the flights first. Ideally we would go from Edinburgh, but could do Glasgow too.
