I need inspiration! We live in London, they loved Paris, Amsterdam and Barcelona. Where next? ( DH and I have both worked a lot in Stockholm, Copenhagen and Oslo over the past 3 years so not keen to go to any of those.) Has to be outside UK. Please share your success stories!

We have loved Venice, Florence, Rome and Lisbon with teens. Venice a firm favourite.

xiaomao · 17/01/2020 19:47

Berlin or Rome definitely, my favourite European cities!

katy1213 · 17/01/2020 19:51

Rome or Venice.

Salzburg was a big hit for the Xmas market, music, travel up to the fort by funicular railway, look at then lovely view. There was ice skating and museums too but we ran out of time. We took a coach trip into Barvaria and went down a salt mine.

We are going to Valencia at Easter. Looks like there is loads to do. Might be worth a look for you.

AgentProvocateur · 17/01/2020 20:12

Madrid or Valencia are both great.

Sewingbea · 17/01/2020 20:36

Berlin
Verona
Venice

If you go anywhere over the Easter weekend check what is open when.

In Germany for example you will find lots of attractions closed on Good Friday, the laws are very strict on that day.

City wise:
Rome (I would avoid the Easter weekend, it is mayhem according to my catholic nun cousin who went one year)
Bruges
Lisbon
Berlin
Munich
Hamburg

Berlin
Barcelona
Prague
Budapest

If they have any interest in history, Berlin, though not the most scenic of cities, is a fascinating place to visit.

Tallinn is beautiful, and you could do a day trip from there to Helsinki. Have also had successful Easter trip to Vienna with teens.

Chochito · 17/01/2020 21:39

Madrid:

General sightseeing / walking around the city

Food markets / tapas tour including chocolate and churros

Retiro Park - hire rowing boats on the lake

Match at Real Madrid or Atlético de Madrid, or Real Madrid or Estudiantes premier league basketball match at Palacio de Deportes

Other things you can do:

  • day trip to the mountains, or to a nearby town like Alcalá de Henares, El Escorial, Segovia, or Toledo
  • art galleries (La Reina Sofía has Picasso's Guérnica, El Museo Del Prado is Spain's -main- national art gallery)
  • royal palace and garden (Campo del Moro)
  • opera / classical music / flamenco (not native to Madrid but there are some decent shows)
  • tour of one of the football stadiums
  • many other museums, planetarium
  • tour of the bullring and bullfighting museum
  • tour of the Parliament, etc.

Weather should be decent.

We have brought teen dc to most of these places and this year will go to Florence and Tallinn / Helsinki

Teen especially enjoyed Gdansk, Venice, Krakow, Berlin

caperplips · 20/01/2020 15:41

Actually she loved Madrid in 2018 - it's fab city with loads to see and do.

We research a LOT so always find good things to see / do where ever we are. We have never not enjoyed a trip away

cptartapp · 20/01/2020 15:48

Just back from Seville with teens. Stunning city.

pamplemoussed · 20/01/2020 16:59

Sorry for the radio silence - and thank you for the suggestions. Had not thought of Tallin - Helsinki but will do so now. I visit Berlin for work so will try and avoid (also eldest teen flunked gcse German so they will veto!) Seville or Madrid also in the running now . I should have said - they've been to Rome. Teens today - so lucky. I did not have a passport until I was 15 and even then it was to visit a family member who had emigrated, so hardly an adventure!

Semana santa in Spain is 5 April until12 April this year it is a really important part of life in Seville, it would be brilliant to go but I know prices are at a peak and it depends on if you can get accommodation and if its the kind of thing that would interest you.

Chochito · 20/01/2020 20:15

Semana Santa is also cool in places like Alicante, Córdoba, Cuenca, Granada, León, Málaga, Salamanca, Toledo, and Zaragoza, (and some less touristy places), although Sevilla is generally considered number one for religious processions. It is a cool thing to see but if it was your first time in the city you might find it slowed you down and made sightseeing a bit more difficult. Also bars, restaurants, will be rammed.
