New York in July - too hot?

I am planning on taking my dd (16yo) to New York in July, to celebrate the end of school! She has hated it and struggled academically and has always wanted to go to NY so it will be a big celebration!

However, is it too hot in July? Would it ruin the trip do you think? It won't feel the same going in October for example, too long after the end of school and well in to the new term at college. Can't go earlier because of revision.

Are we mad considering it?

July can be very hot and humid. But most places are air conditioned once you get inside . And it is great to be able to stroll around with minimal clothing and nights are slightly cooler.
Loads of people live and work there on July and cope OK.
Go for it ! And maybe try to take in July 4th for the spectacular fireworks on the river.

I've been twice, once without kids in July, once with [primary aged kids in August. It was fine. Everywhere is airconditioned - even the subway trains, so it's much more pleasant that London in summer. I think both times it was around 27-29c so hot but not insanely so.

We were there last year end of July/ Aug for a week and it was fine. There was a lovely summery atmosphere.Perfect excuse for lots of ice cream and cold drinks. Only places that were unbearable were a couple of subway stations. You’ll have an amazing time.

I took my DD to Manhattan after GSCE's in July. Yes, it was hot but did not spoil our trip at all. Get up early when it's cooler and maybe have a long lunch in an air conditioned restaurant, then go out again later for the evening. We had a wonderful, memorable time - our best thing was walking from Brooklyn to Manhattan across the Brooklyn Bridge at sunset. Absolutely stunning.

Thanks for all your replies. We've had a chat and we're going to book in July! It's the perfect t time to celebrate and we'll cope with the heat.

Just a warning--July can be very hit and miss in NYC. Yes, there is air conditioning, but outside can feel like a steambath. Add 10 degrees (F) to the temperature as all that heat is going to be radiating off of buildings and asphalt.

It will be fine. A good excuse for lots of fro-yo and 50-50 (iced tea/ lemonade).
Be sure to take knitwear for indoors, they like to set the air con to arctic temperatures.

Went with younger DC in July, was fine, take water bottles as there were loads of free fountains.

Think 16 is a great age to go!

Food/drink v v expensive and hard to find vegetables!

Went to NYC in July 3 years ago and going again this July. Yes it was hot but just brilliant! It’s such a great city in the summer, loads of parks to hang out in and as others have said if the heat gets too much just go in to a shop/restaurant/museum as everywhere has aircon.

As for vegetables/healthy food Wholefoods is your friend in NYC, we regularly went to the ones beside Central Park and Washington Square Park to get delicious food from the food counters and then sit outside to eat it. Now Orlando (our final destination after NYC & DC), thats somewhere that’s hard to find a vegetable in

We were there two summers ago in some extremely hot weather, and tbh it was quite hard work. It didn't stop us seeing lots of stuff but it did slow us down, and we spent more time inside in the aircon than we wanted to. We had to leave a 4th July BBQ in Central Park to go inside because we all felt just awful - and I have lived in a tropical country so I am more used than many Brits to that sort of weather I felt a bit better when I read a newspaper article referring to the exceptional humidity, so I knew it wasn't just me. But as long as you are prepared for heat and humidity and don't try to cram too much in you should be fine.

If you're going to NY, consider taking a short trip to Niagara Falls as well! It'll be cooler and a nice break from skyscrapers. We visited Niagara in July when we went and far from being too hot, we actually needed to wear jumpers.

Went went end of June and it was amazing! Everywhere is air conditioned and walking around Central Park in beautiful warm weather was great! We went to a Yankees game and walked from Manhattan (3 hours) but was lovely.

Summer is my least favourite season in New York. It’s just too hot. Makes me weary. Much nicer in spring or autumn.
