Do you live in/know Manchester City Centre well?

How long will it take us to walk (slowly) from MSIM to Piccadily?
(At the end of the day if we try and get on train at Deansgate there will be no seats.)

Is there a big Borders in the city centre? (I thought there was, but can't find one on their website.)

you can get the tram from Gmex which is round the corner. will only take a few mins then (we are off to MSIM 2mo!)

can't say i have noticed a borders but i haven;t been looking for one iyswim...there is a HUGE virgin though in the arndale

We don't mind walking. I was just wondering how long it would take.

Yes, your thread reminded me that I've not taken ds1 as promised to the Doctor Who exhibition.

But they have Blue Peter badges which means they can get in the exhibtion free, but can't book in advance, so we have to get up really early to get the train to be there soon after opening time, to be guaranteed to get tickets

And after a week on my own with them in York last week I'm struggling to work up the enthusiasm for another grand day out.

if you look at the map on the MSIM website you will see Gmex tram stop. i really wouldn't walk it!

DS1 (4) is a good walker and usually has trouble walking from market street (where the main row of shops are) back up to Piccadilly station

MerlinsBeard · 28/08/2007 17:14

sorry x posts

aah right. erm...in that case i can't help as we are too lazy! you could slowly meander and do some otehr things on the way...manchester eye? food court? Early Learning in basement of Debenhams? promise of millies cookies at the staion?

roisin · 28/08/2007 17:22

They are 8 and 10, and well-used to walking.

They do like trams though, so we may have to get a tram. I just hate walking and queuing, and would rather walk

I've just found there's a huge Waterstones on Deansgate, which might be a carrot - but it's in the wrong direction for Piccadilly!

its not the wrong direction!! its just a different way!

the one i think you are talking about is opposite Kendals. Its just off St Annes Square (with the royal exchange theatre in) which, if you walk thru will put you face to face with M&S and Selfridges...you can eithyer carry on straight and go to the wheel and the printowrks (cinema) or turn right and walk up market Street to the next tram stop!

If you're walking from the MSIM, you can go via Waterstones and then go up through Market Street and to Piccadilly that way. there'd be plenty to look at then, and Piccadilly Gardens is quite nice now to wander through. Or, as has been suggested, take the tram, which would be a nice experience for them?

The Dr Who exhibition is really good, we went at the beginning, but they were supposed to be adding new stuff after each episode of the last series, if so, it will be even better now. DS1 still laughs when he remembers the Dalek saying "you are an enemy of the Daleks" to me as I approached it! I was 8 months pregnant and I still enjoyed it (although I sat in the coffee bar while DH and DS1 investigated the engines part and the children's interactive bit. Have fun!

we did that at Easter and it didn't take us very long at tall.We got train into Deansgate went to MSIM and then shops and train back from Piccadily

roisin · 28/08/2007 19:59

Hiya Nymphadora! Is the Doctor Who Exhibition really worth seeing?

We've been away so much this summer, and so busy, that both I and the boys really want to just chill out: but we have too many things to cram in!

We went to the zoo today - it was heaving. I've promised the boys afternoon tea in U. having declined to take them to Betty's in York! They both want to go brambling. DS1 is doing Go Ape on Friday afternoon - I've blackmailed my brother into taking him

I need to pop in to work, but dh is quite busy now, so I will have to take the boys with me.

Aarrgghh! Why is six weeks' holiday not enough?!

Hiya, we all enjoyed it , it was very busy thoughand you may have to fight your way through to certain things, I found myself organising the kids at the 'work a dalek' exhibit as they were all fighting

We haven't made it to the zoo , may go tomorrow or Thurs depending on which I go to work.We have been in U quite a bit because I need to keep checking bfs house while he is away and tomorrow I need to pick up his car as my Mams is broken and she needs mine!

We need a couple of weeks without the kids , mine are fighting loads now dd1 has been sent to her room three times today

Nymphadora · 28/08/2007 20:22

I love Go Ape but haven't persuaded anyone to go with me this year, planned to go with my class but we have all been very busy

Nymphadora · 28/08/2007 20:22

(staff class not kids class btw!)

MerlinsBeard · 29/08/2007 16:50

Roisin, we went to the MSIM today and were realy disappointed LOts of parts were closed (inc the mezzanine if the air and space hall which teh boys wanted to do the most) and it was HEAVING. We are going to give it another go when its nt so busy but overall we were really disappointed.

HORDES (sp?) of people going into the Dr Who exhibit

roisin · 29/08/2007 18:03

Oh thanks MoM - you've assuaged my guilt. I was just saying to dh that I couldn't face Manchester tomorrow, and was thinking I would maybe take them one Saturday once term has started.

Now I can do this with a guilt-free conscience
