Iceland in March

Any travel tips for what to wear / take to Iceland in March please?

We are going as a family group, mostly adults but also three kids aged 3, 2 and 5 months.

We are staying in an air bnb and plan to do some day excursions, nothing too wild. There for 5 nights.

Also with the 5 month old we are debating whether to take a buggy or if keeping warm will be better in a sling with a big coat over us.

Will we need full on ski gear?

Although not March I went in December a few year ago. Temp was between 1 degree and -15 degrees!! I didn’t take full on ski gear. Layers is the way forward. Decent set of thermals too and trousers. Long sleeved teeshirt and a fleece/jumper. Nice warm water proof coat. Hat buff and gloves. Decent footwear is a must if out and about. When we went further out I took my walking boots. Warm and comfy with a good grip and waterproof. In the capital I was ok with comfy trainers and two pairs of socks.

Sorry I can’t comment on buggy or sling as we were two adults.

I hope you have a wonderful time it was amazing when we went.

Yes it’s cold but a far different type of cold to the uk

I went end Oct/Nov so at the turn of the season, like you but at the other end.
I was fine in a thick padded jacket from Hobbs or my faux fur coat.
It wasn't that much colder than the UK.
However, the weather can be extreme one week and mild the next so I'd pack both thicker and thinner layers.
Take some hiking boots or similar with you.
Also take hats/gloves/scarves.

Went in March some years ago. Mostly I wore two of everything, e.g. two pairs of trousers.

When we got back home to Scotland it felt deliriously warm!

We have been numerous times including in March and it was cold. Generally wore thermal under layers with normal clothes and a good jacket. Good warm boots are a must!

If you plan on doing a fair bit in Reykjavik then pushchair may be handy but not for other activities really. What are your plans?

Meant to say we have family there, we aren't jet setters Grin

I’ve been in March several times. Some years it’s been bloody freezing with snow so bad we couldn’t get anywhere (even with Iceland vehicles kitted out fully) and some years it feels like a February day in the UK about 10 degrees. I’d pack decent jumpers with good quality warm coats so you can layer up or down as required.

Iceland is unpredictable. Weather changes so quickly. I've been in March and it was sunny and warm for Iceland. The locals were walking around in sweaters. The week before I was told it was so cold it was the worst winter they experienced in years. I wore padded waterproof trousers as well as a padded thermalight jacket and snow and hiking boots. We spent most of our time outdoors which included caving and glacier walking.

Thanks for the really fast responses. Will get some thermals and pack lots of layers and waterproofs.

We are staying just outside Reykjavik near some lakes and plan to go to the thermal pools near the airport on the first day. After that will probably plan one more excursion any recommendations. We are north east of Reykjavik.

The main aim is to try and see the northern lights from the hot tub at our accommodation if I can stay up late enough!

Glad you started this, I'm going in March for a long weekend with only cabin luggage [santa]

Very interested in people's experiences as we are hopefully going in February.

I'm going next week - I'm really looking forward to it. We're doing blue lagoon on the way from the airport and have a glacier hike and ice cave trip booked. Just planning hikes and things for the other days. I've gone for thermals, plenty of layers, walking boots and a good waterproof outer layer. So it sounds like I'm along the right lines
