Travelling to Thailand 8 month old baby

has anyone experienced travelling a long haul flight with a baby? We booked tickets to Thailand when my son was a few months old thinking when he’s 8 months it’ll be easy as he’s under 1 years old and will sleep, but how naïve we were as he’s now 6 months and so curious and distracted by everything. I have a few questions;

  1. how long did it take for jet lag to go away? In Thailand it’s 7hrs ahead 🤦🏻‍♀️ Do u have any tips ?
  2. I have just started him on solids. So far it’s purée. I try give him finger food and sometimes he’ll eat, but he has no teeth so will suck. Eg toast, steamed pear etc... I’m worried if I go thailand what I can give him to eat as I haven’t bought any pouch food, I steam the food myself then blend. If anyone has gone to Thailand (Phuket) will they have suitable food at local stores for babies there?
  3. I’ve just started giving him one bottle at night or formula and we have a steriliser at home. How do you steralise a bottle in a hotel room? Use the kettle and pour in a sink or something? (sorry for silly question as I’ve been ebf since he turned 6 months so not sure)

Thanks in advance

Perhaps your DH shouldn't do long haul flights if he's not fit to drive afterwards.
Ha ha Grin Good one. I'm glad you agree with me Grin

'Of course, there are many reasons that a baby might cry on an airplane. Feelings of discomfort, exhaustion, hunger, loneliness, boredom, anger, pain and general unrest are all expressed by wails and tears, if not a total meltdown. However, there is general agreement that the pressure caused by flying at altitude is particularly difficult to bear for babies and toddlers. There is a fundamental anatomical difference between baby and adult ears, Dr. Simon Baer, a consultant ear, nose and throat surgeon in the United Kingdom, told Live Science.'
Why do this to your baby if you don't have to?

And another thing with Thailand is the mosquitoes and dengue fever - although DEET is approved for babies over two months, IIRC.
Sorry OP - I responded emotionally to your thread with my first reply but I honestly didn't plan to hijack it. I should've realised that it would go that way though.

You have somewhat hijacked it. Not everyone has the same experience. My baby didn't cry at all, and the people sitting behind us who were obviously concerned actually mentioned they hadnt heard her at all during the flight.
We didnt have a problem with mozzies, you use cream, can buy spray and coils etc there very easily, dont be out at dusk. Dengue fever is not a problem in the cities.
I found it easily travelling with a baby there the locals are very welcoming to babies .

I have travelled long haul with my first baby and found it relatively straight forward - echo previous advice re Milton steriliser, pack pouches etc. That said, I’m not putting no 2 baby on a plane until she’s had the MMR now - I keep hearing about measles outbreaks everywhere and it would only take one person on a plane.

Dipsydoodle, watching the moon, heartyrebel- thank you very much for your comments, I agree with you. Why should we stop enjoying our lives now just because we have a baby? All I did was ask some simple questions, but got a long reply about their first world problems ... ignored 🙄

Thank you Jenda for your very helpful advice. Ah yes who knows what fun we have in store for us 🤪 That’s true I could always pack some pouch food! It is still early days (2 weeks into weaning), I just hope he can do finger food by 8 months as it’d be so much easier for us. Milton steraliser, never heard of it! Will look into it now.. thanks so much!

Hi Grumpy hoon - why should babies stay away from rice? I’m very cautious of not giving fresh fruit that you have to wash eg berries. for the bottle water I heard it’s best to steralise tap water as bottle water as high sodium content. I know tap water in Thailand isn’t safe but if it’s boiled surely it will kill all the bacteria? I’ll research more into that though, thank you

Soon to be - yes I’ve been 3 times. 4 months for one of the holidays. and I’ve loved it each time. Lots of families and babies around. Can’t wait!

Thank you bookish, lampan, frAzzled - I’ll take that on board! 🙂 I have booked an appointment with the gp this week to double check any vaccinations he needs. He’s had all the up to date ones. We will be in Phuket, planning to have a “relaxing” holiday at our resort right by the beach. Not planning on doing much else 🍹

Expressed ways & Gold pendent- oh no! Hopefully if that Happends then we can take it in turns to cat nap by the pool while my husband or I go back in the hotel for nap times with our son.

Thanks all
