Feb half term- heat in Europe?!

Pegase · 11/12/2019 12:33

Really hoping someone can share some experience as internet searching is getting me absolutely nowhere. I am hoping to find a relatively luxurious Feb half term destination to go to with DH and DD6. I am pg (hopefully still will be by then as haven't had my scan yet) and will be around 22 weeks.

Am looking for European (relative) sunshine as want to stay out of the tropics. We have taken DD to south of France, Italy and Japan so normally we choose somewhere we like and find the kids things for her to do there! We'd really like a final holiday with her just the three of us before the baby comes and Feb is the only time we can go!

Canary Islands is nice that time of year

Pegase · 11/12/2019 12:57

Any recommendations for a nice part of the Canaries? We went to Fuerteventura (about a decade ago to be fair) and it was full of English all you can eat breakfasts and we found it very difficult to find any local cuisine. May have totally changed since then though!

We went to Lanzarote one February half term. It never got above 18 degrees until the last day, when we reached the dizzy heights of 20 degrees. And the evenings were decidedly chilly.

fussychica · 13/12/2019 16:28

Just back from the western Algarve. We had great weather for the most part but not been in Feb so can't recommend from experience.
The Canaries are your best chance for warmth though you could be lucky in southern Spain at that time.

You could have a look at Tavira on the Algarve. We went last Feb for my parents 50th wedding anniversary. It wasn’t boiling or pool weather (although DD did swim!) at around 16/17 degrees but was a damn sight warmer than here! It’s a pretty old town with plenty of bars and restaurants. We stayed in the converted Convent next to the Castle which was lovely and upmarket. We had suites which my DF had negotiated a good rate on. Nice place!

Otherwise at that time of year you’re looking at Gran Canaria, Tenerife etc for some sun. I’ve been to Tenerife many years ago on a free holiday, it’s not the usual kind of place I go to so went with a bit of prejudice. Had a really nice time in fact! Not sure what the weather will be like in Feb.

superram · 14/12/2019 08:07

The canaries will be your best bet in Europe. What about Dubai? I won’t go as I disagree with their human rights but it’s luxurious.

SJaneS48 · 14/12/2019 11:17

Dubai will be warm by U.K. standards but since I lived there for 4 years they seem to have knocked down anything of historic value and built high rise after high rise with 3rd world labour on punitive working contracts. And that’s only one of the human rights issues. Oman however is much nicer (if your budget will stretch to it).

PlushPlush · 14/12/2019 11:25

I went to Porto in January and it was t-shirt and jeans weather, pretty decent I thought

Ginfordinner · 14/12/2019 11:35

I don't think that is typical January weather in Porto though PlushPlush. Average January high is 14 degrees which is not T-shirt weather IMO.

Pegase · 14/12/2019 16:41

I always feel a bit anxious about the Middle East. DH and I are married but I am mixed race so sometimes get a bit of hassle. Don't know much about Oman so will look into that.

Algarve in feb is warmer than uk but not beach weather - 18 will be a nice day

Lanzarote wasn’t that warm in June tag 🤣

Cape Verde? Not sure about the winds but warmer climate

ivykaty44 · 14/12/2019 16:48

Oman is the Middle East

Hellohah · 14/12/2019 16:51

@PlushPlush we went to Porto in April, and it was freezing. Definitely big coat weather... It also pissed it down.

clemmy0m · 14/12/2019 16:54

Sal or another island in Cape Verde could be good option? The islands are just outside of Europe but still only 4 hours flight away? They have pretty much the same climate all year? I've been to Sal in March and it was around 21-27 degrees. It wasn't your typical British resort and and if you like doing active outdoorsy things/day trips to other islands/wildlife it's great. Not much in the way of history/culture you would get somewhere bigger though as the islands are small.

Pegase · 14/12/2019 19:58

Yes aware it is in the Middle East still but don't know much about it as a tourist destination! We would normally do a mix of wildlife, cultural sites and beachy stuff. Sadly I'll be in the no fly zone by May half term when everywhere heats up!

We did Lanzarote in Feb. It was cold and windy. Did find some excellent local food and plenty to do. But not warm

Done Portugal in January a couple of times was warmer both times than Lanzarote but think we where lucky. Love the algarve out of season and again found some great food off the beaten track. Would be awful in summer going on the good reviews on trip advisor for where we stayed.

You’ve got to go further for some proper warm weather. Enjoyed the Caribbean in Jan and this year we are off to west Africa should be 32oC

lovelyupnorth · 19/12/2019 07:56

Oman would be lovely in Feb. Long time since I went 30 years so not worth commentating on what would be good to do. But even then was nicer than Dubai Raq etc.

HelloDulling · 19/12/2019 08:00

We have stayed at the Princess Yaiza hotel in Playa Blanca in Lanzarote several Feb half terms. Lovely hotel with good provision of activities for kids.

Playa Blanca is a mix of v nice places to eat/shop, and then some of the more all-you-can-eat places too.

Weather can be 28 and lovely, or quite a bit cooler.

Thethingswedoforlove · 19/12/2019 08:30

Cape Town? Not Europe but no time difference and a straightforward overnight flight. And sooo amazing when you get there!

KittenVsXmastree · 19/12/2019 08:38

Pegase in 4 years of living in the middle east as a couple with different heratiges, and duel heratige kids, we never had any issues.
Oman is fabulous. Highly recommended.

Mentounasc · 19/12/2019 09:05

You definitely need to go as far south as possible if you want it to be warm enough to do beach stuff. I remember having Christmas on the south-eastern tip of Spain years ago and it was about 20 degrees - warm enough for Christmas lunch in the garden and walking along the beach, but nowhere near enough for a swim. So I could imagine the Canaries would be a bit better.

The Middle East wouldn't necessarily be much better - I've bern in Lebanon in Feb and it was fairly chilly, about 16 degrees.

lovelyupnorth · 19/12/2019 09:45

Good few hundred miles between Lebanon and Oman though.

KittenVsXmastree · 19/12/2019 10:17

Couple of thousand miles between Lebanon and Muscat.
It will be warm in Feb - probably mid 20s, dropping into the high teens overnight. I have pics of the kids in shorts in Muscat in December.

SJaneS48 · 19/12/2019 13:21

Average temp in Muscat in Feb is 26 degrees. Interesting city OP nestled between mountains and the sea. Oman hasn’t bulldozed down its history so there are forts and old towns in day trippable distance, an old souk, nice corniche and great beaches. The terrain is mountainous and there are trips you can do in a 4 wheel drive out to wadi’s.
