Camping with a Newborn ? Help

Hi Ladies,

I usually go camping in Spain or France in late June, July every year, my dd is 11 and my ds is 8 but in 2020 we will have a new baby please god. They will be born in late April.

I still want to be able to go away for a week but hoping to get some suggestions on where to go.

Would I be best off to stick to the camping, staying in an a/c mobile home? Baby would be around 6 weeks old mark, is there any parcs you could recommend that are baby friendly but would suit the other kids.

They like to have a nice pool with slides etc. I also don't want somewhere too far from an airport.

Am I bonkers, or do you think a baby that age would be quite portable?

personally i wouldnt take a baby that young camping under canvas, primarily because i would be worried about it waking other campers in the night. we did take our youngest to france in a mobile when he was 6 weeks old - mind you he slept through the night from birth. it was fine. baby is sort of irrelevant as they dont know where you are, especially if you breast feed. so i would pick somewhere for the other kids. we used to love brittany

can you drive? we used to go on the ferry and that allowed us to take loads of crap in the car. flying with 3 young kids is quite hard work, though the age difference of yours is bigger than mine.

You might want to look at this campsite OP.

As well as camping there are lots of glamping/accommodation options that might better suit with a newborn.

I think I'd struggle to be without a private bathroom and A/C with such a small baby so I'd look at one of the lodges.

It's near an airport as requested and has multiple pools/facilities onsite.

I've camped with 2 of my dc at that age. It was honestly the easiest time I took them. You need such little stuff for them compared to a toddler. Make sure they are warm enough at night but generally, lots if fresh air seems to make them sleep better.

Make sure they are warm enough at night

I think the problem here in June/July in Spain would be to make sure they are cool enough at night. I wouldn't want to take a 6 week old camping under canvas TBH. Also, driving to the South of France or Spain woud take forever because of all the stops for feeding/nappy changing/baby spending too long in a car seat.

Can you stick to the UK? 6 weeks can be tight with passports etc, especially if baby is late. Somewhere like Devon or Cornwall.

ElphiasDoge · 08/12/2019 23:44

If recent years are anything to go on you may well have Mediterranean weather here in the UK. Just in case passport turnarounds are tight, especially if you go to 42 weeks. And no idea of the Brexit situation! Also France/Spain have had extremely hot summers - agree you might struggle to keep them cool in Spain in a heatwave. If you were going for it would consider maybe a mobile home/Eurocamp type set up rather than just canvas. Be nice to have running water for nighttime nappy changes and the huge amount of fluid you need to drink for breastfeeding!

Serious question and not being snarky but why on earth would you want to go away with a baby that young? It seems crazy to me. It's only one year. Wouldn't it be better for both you and the new baby and easier to have a week relaxing at home? Travel is a hassle and stressful at the best of times.

I'd be bothered about staying so, long in a car seat tbh. Not healthy at, that age..

dreamingofsun · 09/12/2019 09:22

dorothy - we found the baby stage to be by far the easiest where holidays were concerned. the 18months to 2 year olds were the hardest by far as they had to be watched the whole time or they would be off exploring

DorothyParkersCat · 09/12/2019 11:48

I meant more the stress of travel with a baby and 2 children and all the crap that goes with moving a baby around - bottles, nappies, cribs, muslins...

Easier not to move.
