Didn’t realise I needed to tip!

Hi all, Staying in a lovely five star hotel as a birthday treat. Not something I normally do and stupidly didn’t realise I needed to tip the guy that showed us to our room and the one who bought our luggage up! 😳 Is there anything I can do to make up for it? Was wondering if I should put some money in an envelope for them and leave it at reception? And do I give them extra to make up for my faux pas?! Thank you!

When I googled after we arrived it said people normally tip in a 5* hotel?
EpcotForever · 29/11/2019 15:13
I would normally tip. I wouldn't go and find them now, but remember for next time.
Bluntness100 · 29/11/2019 15:14
I would also normally tip but it's not mandatory. Don't go searching now or leave and envelope, leave it be.
ParkheadParadise · 29/11/2019 15:15
I would normally give a tip.
I always leave money in the room for housekeeping when we leave.

I can only dream of staying in a 5 star hotel but it wouldn't cross my mind to get cash out of the bank before checking in so I could tip. I rarely have cash these days.

Don't worry, not everyone tips - they won't think anything of it. Just remember next time!
JellyfishAndShells · 29/11/2019 15:26
No, of course you don’t need to in the UK in a 5* star. In some hotels in central London catering mainly to an international clientele, especially Americans who have a deeply embedded tipping culture, it may be more of a custom but it’s not a faux pas at all not to do so.
msmith501 · 29/11/2019 15:51
I wouldn't tip someone for carrying a suitcase up. I'd carry my own to be honest.
Fairenuff · 29/11/2019 16:43
If you're paying for 5* treatment then could reasonably expect someone to take your bags to your room. If you have to tip then you might as well wheel them along yourself. It's money for nothing.

I love mumsnet! Thanks for all your responses. I won’t worry about it but will remember if I’m ever this lucky again!

Stayed in plenty of 5 star hotels and never tipped. Does my head in.
