I'm looking at going to PE Island next year to fulfil my Anne of green gables dreams. Has anyone been? What's a good time of year? How long should I go for?

Yes! I went in the summer of 2007 (so a fair while ago now!) did a massive detour to go there to fulfil my Anne of Green Gables dreams and loved it.

I went to see the Anne of Green Gables musical whilst I was there!

I only went for 3 days - It was part of a trip from Toronto to Halifax for me.

Being from there, I would only do a few days in PEI, there's really not much else to do there besides spend a few hours at Cavendish Beach. Spend some time in Halifax, Nova Scotia or do a drive round the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton, go down to the South Shore of Nova Scotia (Chester and Lunenburg) .

Go in the summer. June/July/August or even the beginning of September would be the nicest time.

Thanks all, so it looks like a couple of days to do the sights and musical. I need to sell it to my husband and ten year old boys so any idea of things I can do to make it a more family trip?

What do they like? Forts? Whale watching? Tall ships? Pub crawls?

Not pubs, one ds is a wheelchair user so we can't do long walks etc but they are happy with most things. I've watched aogg with them so will get some of the references but their idea of a holiday is disney or pools/beach

Inverness beach in cape Breton is one of the first places in the world to offer beach wheel chairs and a wheel chair accessible beach. If they are interested in the titanic the graveyards are in Halifax. There is so much more to the Maritime provinces then Anne of Green gables

Thanks that is useful to know, I'm sure it's more than Anne of green gables so it's really interesting to talk to a local,

I'm looking at this and I didn't realise there is so much to do on nova soctia. If we flew into Halifax is it possible to drive to PEI with a stop along the way, how easy is it to drive in Canada? I had know idea there was a bridge connecting the island to the mainland.

We did it 3 years ago. We are in Boston so we took the ferry from Portland ME (that is a great town in itself) to Nova Scotia - did Nova Scotia for about 4 days and then PEI for 2 or 3. I loved it. The Anne of Green Gables house was lovely but the rest of PEI and Nova Scotia was also gorgeous.

And the poutine ....

It's very easy to drive in Canada. You can take the bridge in Amherst or the ferry in Pictou. Renting a car will open you up to lots of beautiful places.

Just be prepared for AOGG house to be really, really busy! It's very popular with Japanese tourists for some reason, and there were loads of coach trips when we went. But PEI and that part of Canada in general is very beautiful.

If you go to Nova Scotia as well, I can really recommend Tatamagouche - we stayed here All the rooms are converted train carriages!

We’ve been - I loved it. Combined it with Nova Scotia. Beautiful islands and a lovely family holiday.
