Travel Agent or DIY?

Went to Thailand last year, booked via travel agent. She was hopeless - gave duff information on flights, had to chase her for final itinerary that I didn't get until a few days before travel to find that the requested (and I assume paid for) upgraded rooms weren't included. We did three locations and on each location we had private transfers. On each occasion I had to spend considerable time trying to find out when these transfers would pick us up - on one occasion we almost missed our internal flight! I vowed never to use a TA again.

Our final hotel was fabulous. Absolutely out of this world. We decided to return and costed it on the hotel website (guaranteed cheapest rates). Turns out the cost of 6 nights in that hotel was several thousand more than I had paid for the whole holiday! So that makes me think booking through a TA does have some value after all.....

We are new to this kind of holiday . I've never really used a TA in the past just doing DIY and mainly doing French gites or UK cottages. Now a convert to exploring further afield.

Looking at Sri Lanka for next year. What's the advice- DIY or TA? And if a TA should I look at Trailfinders, Kuoni or Emirates?

Skyscanner for checking flights
Book direct with Emirates or Quatar
It's cheaper if you avoid all bank & school holidays. The earlier you book, the cheaper

Hotel check direct, booking.com, hotels.com, apodo etc

You can get a metered taxi at the airport

Where are you going in Thailand ?
Can maybe make some suggestions

Travel agent if you want to do multi-centre in my opinion unless you are a backpacker or on a very tight budget. I wouldn’t go with any you listed though.

I normally do DIY but have used Kuoni before and they are excellent. They can put you in touch with staff who have actually visited where you want to go.

Multi centre is easy to book yourself, just book a flight between the destinations.

Pick what you want, then price it up yourself and get a quote from an agent. As long as you've included everything, and got appropriate insurance, go with which is cheapest.

Also I wouldn't use a metered taxi at the airport when you've only just arrived. Tourists are easy pray for a driver who wants to take an extra long route and charge you for the privilege.

I'd go via Hays Travel, if there's one nearby, seem like a nice company to deal with.

I've had both good & bad experiences with TAs; the only one I will use now is a local independent company who have proved their worth.

We DIY for Europe, cruises & anywhere we're comfortable with the language.

For tours, we tend to use package tour operators. If you can find one with a suitable itinerary, it will almost certainly be cheaper than trying to arrange all your own flights, hotels & transfers - and no hassle!

We went to Sri Lanka this year. I haven’t used a Travel Agency for years - I’ve never not been able to cost out a nicer holiday for a lot less money - it’s does all involve time and research though if you’re going to do it properly!

Start with what time of year you want to go - our summer is their monsoon. We went in April - it was just warming up for their rainy season but overall really good weather. The East Coast is fine in our summer but the rest of the country is wet. Most of the places we wanted to go were on the Western side.

In terms of where to go - Lonely Planet in-line have a number of suggested itineraries of where you should visit based on your interests but also take a look at the Sri Lankan travel itineraries that more adventurous holiday companies like Audley, Exodus & Intrepid have and rip them off!

We usually do 3-4 days in each place - in Sri Lanka we had a day in Colombo just to get over the jet lag - we stayed in the Cinnamon Red booked on booking.com which does offer protection) before being driven to Kandy (there is also a train that is popular but DH wasn’t keen). I liked Kandy, it’s big and sprawling and not everyone likes it but it’s pretty magical around the lake at sunset with the view of the temple, monks and prayers on loudspeakers in the trees. We stayed at the Ozo (again from booking.com). We did days out to Sigiriya, Dambulla, Minneriya National Park (DD loved the Safari and seeing wild elephants) and Nuwara Eliya. We then got driven down to the coast and had 5 lovely days in Tangalle on the beach (staying at the Lagoon Paradise).

I used 2 different transports companies and found them on Tripadvisor (I contacted the Top 5 recommended companies, gave them our itinerary and asked for quotes). We had great drivers with both companies who drive carefully, spoke good English & had good new (ish) vehicles. Hiring a driver is very common and most Western families we met had done exactly that. If you want their details, happy to provide & recommend ours.

I go on Tripadvisor recommendations for hotels. They don’t cost a fortune in Sri Lanka and the basic local hotels (we had to stop for toilet breaks at 2) were really grim so I personally wouldn’t go less than 4 star. Food is good, varied and cheap (I’m veggie & had no problems). We met some Aussies who were using Air BnB accommodation across the country and were having a really mixed experience.

I used Skyscanner & Kayak to research flights and they cost just over £1300 for the 3 of us on Air Kuwait (which is fine) changing planes in Kuwait. Get good travel insurance whoever you fly and look carefully at their definitions of Scheduled Airline Failure.

We all really really loved Sri Lanka - it’s a beautiful country with genuinely nice people you can only wish well. 3 days after we got back the bombings happened. I understand security (which was really relaxed when we were there had tightened up a lot since.

If you’ve any questions at all, happy to answer them!

Lonely Planet online not inline!

SJane48S · 28/10/2019 22:13

And drove carefully not drive, jeez! Must stop typing at speed and sense check more!!

N1ghtW0nder00h · 28/10/2019 23:17

Never used a TA for any travel so far in Asia. Been on lots of multiple destination holidays.
You can research approx price of taxi/tuk tuk before you travel. Of course foreigners pay a bit more & I expect to pay a little bit more

Last year went to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpa, Borneo, Vietnam, Chang Mai, Bangkok
for a month. With lots of little trips at each destination

N1ghtW0nder00h · 28/10/2019 23:23

This year we only booked the flights & first 3 days accommodation. We have booked the rest as we travel round.
Have got some good bargains, by booking accommodation the day before, last minute !

rookiemere · 30/10/2019 13:23

We're going to Costa Rica next summer. I rang a travel agent for a quote - expecting it to be a few hundred more expensive than doing it myself- but the figure quoted was ridiculous several thousand more than I could come up with in about 10 minutes of checking websites.
