CrazyCatLady159 · 27/10/2019 00:08

Hi!
Going Iceland in December for 4 days. Have hired a car so will be doing the golden circle, chasing the northern lights & have booked the blue lagoon for our final day before heading back to the airport.

Does anyone have any tips / food places etc that we haven't thought of Smile
Thanks! Biscuit

Check where to go for cheap drinks/happy hour and more here
We found it very useful!

I've got some timberlands but might look into these grips for my daughter and for other shoes if I take some

Beginning of February

I'm also going in December & taking lots of tips off this thread.
Wondering if any of you used a clothing hire service while you were there rather than buying & taking with you ?

CosmoK · 08/11/2019 21:04

We went in January and it snowed for 3 days. It wasn't too cold ......New York in December was much colder!!

It's one of my all time favourite destinations 😍

Starlight456 · 08/11/2019 22:13

@gillys

The thing about Iceland is the wind . We were told it is the second or third windiest Island and the others are uninhabited.

We took ski jackets , a decent hat and gloves .and socks. when we went to glacier and on northern lights boat. They offer big thick ski all in one type thing. On the ship they insist children wearing them.

Other thing anyone who has a child 11 and under many of the trips are free for them .

Starlight456 · 08/11/2019 22:14

@CrazyCatLady159 if you go in the glacier the give you crampons to wear

Starlight456 · 08/11/2019 22:22

Posted picture of secret lagoon, truck up to glacier and inside glacier

It is in my top 3 holidays ever .

I would also say we were more careful over the cost of food and drank water with most meals . Spent the money on the trips

We had a standard Kfc box meal one night thought it would be cheap and cheerful . It was £30 for 2. You know the food is expensive just thought I would give you an idea.

We drove in February and had no problem - drove route 1 along south and back as well as golden circle. Keep an (obsessive) eye on the travel/weather websites and just be prepared to be flexible with your plans if the weather is too bad to travel. It’s the wind that’s the main problem. Though we also had snow, ice, rain.
We took loads of thermals that we didn’t wear - was more v cold/wet UK rather than arctic. Good quality waterproofs incl trousers were our best things.
Would definitely say the spiky things to go over your boots - the sheet ice in car parks was the worst.
Would def recommend Kerid crater.
We loved Iceland. Was meant to be ticking it off the bucket list and just want to go back nowSmile

Can anyone recommend a snowmobile/ glacier/ ice cave tour at all?

Starlight456 · 10/11/2019 12:49

The glacier you are bused to the base so irrelevant which company you go with.

Planning my third trip -magical place, great people, overwhelmingly beautiful landscapes.

Practicalities - get your duty free on the way in. We took small flasks to take a boozy coffee with us on our day trips. We also took snacks (nuts, Clif bars, dark chocolate, jerky) to take during the day, tea and coffee, hot chocolate sachets, and I took a little stacking pot of herbs and spices to liven up rather bland pasta dishes and grilled cheese sandwiches! And a refillable water bottle - the tap water is delicious (if a little eggy smelling at first).

The city pools are heaven - I go very early or very late and do the full round of steam room, cold dip, swim then hot pot soak. Best six quid you'll ever spend. Don't forget your towel and plastic bag to drop your wet suit into.

Loved the Secret Lagoon - we did it as part of the 'platinum' Golden Circle tour - used I Heart Reykjavik site for recommendations for our tours and they were brilliant. Small mini bus, no more than ten of us on the bus, brilliant tour guide. We went to the tomato greenhouses restaurant and that was great - you get to pet the Icelandic horses there (don't call them ponies!).

Braud & Co for The Best cinnamon buns you'll ever try. Loved the food hall, flea market, and exploring Tonar and Lucky Records. Bonus for basic food items (we actually took packets of 'very naice' ravioli etc for quick lunches as we had so much planned we knew we'd only have an hour back in our apartment between the next event/tour). We also went on the history of brewing in Iceland tour which was loads of fun (with loads of samples) and met really nice people.

Loved walking along the coastline - bitterly cold.

Download the Appy Hour app for a fun pub crawl.

Layers, layers, layers! You go from biting icy wind to extremely warm indoors and need to adjust your clothing quickly! Definitely a waterproof that goes to your knees if you can or certainly waterproof over trousers if you are going out of the city on a tour. Uniqlo Heattech is your friend. Get a trapper hat that does up under your chin or it'll blow off! YakTrax for when it's icy.

We loved the Icelandic Street Food cafe - the lamb soup in a bread bowl with free refills was great.

We enjoyed visiting Harpa, Hallgrimskirkja, the Icelandic art gallery, Icelandic handknitting association and wandering in and out of cafes and bars in between day tours. We were so fortunate on our last night to have a magical display of the Northern Lights (I cried with joy!).

It's such a wonderful place - hope you love it.

IJumpedAboardAPirateShip · 30/11/2019 03:22

My best friend is Icelandic so I’ve been a few times to visit her. I would add to the voices saying don’t self drive, she said the number of car accidents have exploded since tourists started coming and driving themselves around, they’re not used to the conditions and it’s really dangerous.

The city pools as mentioned above are brilliant and I personally loved the blue lagoon but I went at 8am when it’s practically empty (and pitch black!) it’s magical being there as the sky lightens and leaving by 10/11 when it fills up

CrazyCatLady159 · 13/12/2019 16:03

Thank you to everyone who posted on the thread!

I did self drive - not one problem! Saved myself ALOT of money
Did the golden circle, kerid crater, the plane wreck on the beach, chased the northern lights and saw them on our last night, saw the John Lennon light and visited the blue lagoon! Had THE best time ever and can't wait to go back Grin

Placemarking as planning to go in March for my 40th. Been looking at hiking a glacier. Picking up guidebooks from the library next week.Grin

Just had to update as so excited, I've booked my accommodation!

I went with an apartment in the end about 15/20 minute walk from the centre, as they are cheaper than hotels:

www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g189970-d7659423-Reviews-Northern_Comfort_Apartments-Reykjavik_Capital_Region.html

There is the Bonus supermarket next door (Iceland's 'cheap' supermarket).

For anyone interested in cheaper hotel options (I looked at a lot!), these all had good review. They are not right in the centre but everything is within a 20 minute walk or so.

22 Hill Hotel
Hotel Lotus
Brim Hotel
Klopp Hotel

Slightly higher end:

Eyja Guldsmeden
Hotel Oldinvse (more central)

I think they all include breakfast and transfers.
