Boston road trip advice

We are planning to go to Boston for two weeks next Aug. Don't mind the heat as previously did Nashville/Smoky Mountains and California/Vegas in Aug.

We would love to see Niagra falls is well? Is this doable? Any towns you would recommend stopping off on the way.

Anyone done a similar trip? My kids will be 18 and 13. We like museums, beaches etc. Thanks.

Its about 470 miles from Boston to Niagara Falls (the American side of the falls is also not quite as spectacular as the Canadian side) and doing that journey will take a fair chunk out of your holiday. Its not a very scenic journey either because it is all interstate road. I would therefore stay in New England and explore that state more.

Lucky you. Lovely area. I would take a look in Vermont and New England, at all the pretty whiteboard villages and churches. Maybe a hike in the mountains there (only been there in winter for skiing but it was beautiful.)
In Boston you have to do the Freedom Trail. I found it so moving. And have crab linguine in the Italian quarter. The science museum is amazing if you have kids.
We went to Harvard - were a bit underwhelmed tbh. But maybe we looked in the wrong places. It was just bleak and empty not teeming with life like Oxford and Cambridge are in comparison.
Martha's Vineyard is near. Never went but wanted to.

Attila. Thanks for your advice. I was concerned about the distance as well.

millifiori thanks for all the suggestions.

We went to New England last year and loved it. DS was 13.

We flew in and out of Boston, did all the sights and museums, visited Harvard and MIT.

We drove up to Maine, stayed in Camden and Kennebunkport. Visited Portland, Freeport (shopping), ate lobster, visited all the lighthouses, went sailing. If we had more time I would have went to Bar Harbour.

Finished off on Cape Cod. Miles of beaches, picture perfect little towns, ferry to Marthas Vineyard (Jaws) and Nantucket. More lobster, whale watching.

Sounds brilliant Belinda, thanks.

Just to wait for cheaper flights now!

We live in Maine and have driven to Niagara, it’s not too bad, the drive is the best part of a day mostly spent driving through New York State.

I really enjoyed going to Concord. It's not far from Boston and is one of the older towns - Thoreau (Walden Pond) lived there as did Louisa May Alcott (Little Women). You can visit Walden Pond (and swim in it) for free, and go round LMA's house.

We also went down to the mayflower 2 and Plymouth Plantation, which is a living history recreation of the early days of white settlement in the area

We did a trip like Belinda. I wouldn’t stay more than 3 nights in Boston, so many other gorgeous places to visit. We were underwhelmed with Boston. Cape Cod, Maine and Vermont were our highlights.

Thanks for the replies. We were planning about 3 days in Boston I think.

We stayed with family in Rhode island and drove up to Boston and beyond up to Portland and Freeport for shopping. If you go south of boston, there is a place called battleship cove which my DC loved.
