Am taking my sis off to Barcelona on my dh's airmiles on Oct 1st. First time we've had a girlie weekend away for I can't recall how long. Have got flights but now can't find a hotel. Want something central and around 100 euros a night ish - anyone got any recommendations?

A friend who goes to barcelona a lot recommended Hotel Gaudi, which I did not go to...

Dh just came back from there . He stayed in the maritim district, which was redeveloped recently, in this hotel. It was about 4 stops from the centre of barcelona.

Don't know if that helps. We got a v good deal on it through expedia.

We went last month and stayed at the Hotel Majestic www.hotelmajestic.es

Very nice, maybe a bit expensive but they have deals on the website.

Thanks - think majestic may be too pricey, and maraitim may be too far out (sorry I sound so picky - I really am grateful). Will look up Hotel Gaudi
Please keep suggestions coming! Thanks again

We went in June and stayed in a reasonable hotel, just off Las Ramblas...I think it was called Hotel Ronda..(or Ronda something)
not too expensive, well situated etc.
Have a fantastic time (you will!)

Ok no more suggestions or I'll start worrying I've made a mistake... Between me and sis must've phoned about 20 places - all full -some convention going on in town. Anyway found a website specialising in hotels on/off the Ramblas and have booked this one costing £120 a night for two of us incl breakfast which is more than we wanted to pay but have worked out that as it has a pool no point getting hair done in advance, so have saved there, we're both off coffee so that's at least a tenner saved, it's central so no money on taxis, going to only eat tapas - so big saving there.....in end they're effectively paying us to go.......... It's a b'day pressie for her and the 13th anniversary of our lovely mother's death (she was only 50 when she died, which is suddenly freakily close) so frankly as two motherless children (well adults) I've decided we deserve a break!
Thanks as always to one and all for getting back to me. Will let you know how it goes!

This hotel looks great Cll. I've just booked it myself as I've been looking for ages for something decent, central and reasonably priced. Hope you have a fab time and let us know what its like.

Just got back yesterday. We stayed in a budget hotel on rambla canaletes (at the top near placa de catalunya) and it was only 75 euro a night inc breakfast. Basic but clean and comfortable room with aircon bath and balcony onto la rambla. V friendly multilingual staff too. Hotel Lloret. Highly recommended. Fabulous city!

Hope you found somewhere good Cil

Here are some great places to eat ... Marina Moncho's (at Port Olimpic) was the best meal I had there despite the dodgy name. Best jamon i've ever tasted and the chipirones and bunuelos were fabulous. Cost 70 euros for massive meal for 2 with drinks and puddings.

There are some excellent and cheap tapas bars on the Passeig de Gracia, north of Placa de Catalunya. Ba Ba Reeba was our favourite, but Tapas Tapas was good too.

Avoid restaurants on las ramblas, the ones we tried were expensive and not very good. One in particular - Genovese 1911 - was spectacularly bad - we sent the food back and walked out.

Taller de Tapas is also very good - there's one near Santa Maria del Pi in the Barri Gotic and another one on the way down to Barceloneta.

We had a glorious wonderful time - just what we needed. Fantastic weather helped and we had both afternoons from 3-6 in bikinis on the beach. I even swam and both of us had massages fro 15 euros for half an hour both days (profligate!)

The hotel was fine, a bit sterile, but comfortable beds, easy location - we walked almost everywhere or took the nearby tube - nice breakfast but beware of being a minute late or they get stroppy. THe pool is hot but tiny and the jacuzzi and sauna were out of order which was a bit sad but it was good to be able to have a shower and get changed on Sunday evening before flying home. We had fantastic food partic at C'an Pep a famous tapas bar just down from the Picasso museum (which is also fab). Guide boo says to be outside can pep at 1.30 when it opens but you need to be there at 1 and queue (take it in turns to check out nice shops nearby) - we got there at 1.30 and had to queue inside for an hour but it was well worth it. I could go on. But it was all just so perfect. Thanks to all for advice
