Christmas markets especially? I'm tempted to book a weekend for Christmas shopping but not really heard of many others going.

Yes it's a beautiful city with stunning architecture but if I'm honest there's not much to do so it depends what you're after.

If looking for a peaceful break I'm a beautiful city then do it.

If you're looking for activities then don't

I went with DD in the summer, we had a lovely time.

I would recommend schonbrunn palace if you are keen on history, the more expensive tour is well worth it IMHO. Also the grounds are gorgeous tho we were there in nice weather.

Kunsthistorischesmusem and Belvedere are great galleries, the restaurant in the KH museum is lovely and Belvedere has Klimts Kiss plus loads of great Egon Schiele if you like turn of the century art. To be fair these galleries and palaces are not cheap for two adults, I had dd who is 18 so it was all free for her!

The best places we ate were a Wiener Schnitzel place where they were enormous and yummy, just google best schnitzel places, and a great Asian/Vietnamese place a friend in Vienna knew. Wil try to find it.

Ok this was the Vietnamese place www.nguyensphohouse.at/?utm_source=tripadvisor&utm_medium=referral

I'm surprised to hear anyone say there's not much to do; the architecture is amazing, there's lots of history and art, comparable to anywhere I know outside Paris and London, loads of nice places to eat, you can ride the ring tram round the city centre, great shopping if you like that...

Love Vienna. Been a few times and think it's underrated on the European capitals stage. Stunning architecture, great museums and the Danube running through it. I liked going up the spire of St Stephens Cathedral and the small but interesting music museum. Also went to a classical concert which was wonderful. Went to the Christmas market at the Rathausplatz (Town hall square) which was nice and atmospheric. More traditional than the UK with lots of nativity scenes to buy and stuff which is possibly not everyone's cup of tea but a gluhwein and a hot dog always go down well. You'll love it!

We went there at the end of November just before the Christmas Markets were starting, but were being constructed. There were a lot of them!
However it is a beautiful city where you could eat in a different cafe 3 times a day and not repeat for a couple of weeks!
The hotel that we stayed at even left chocolate cake and sparkling wine as it was my brothers birthday without me asking!
