Paris for October half-term (children 8 & 7): hotel suggestions?

Ideal would be something combining great comfort & efficiency with masses of character: as a family, we like eccentricity, culture & food, & the sort of hotel-keepers who like talking to their guests about such.

Anyone got any ideas? I should think there should be something in the Marais ...

We are going to paris in the october half term too, what attractions are you thinking of visting, do you have any suggestion where we could visit.

I haven't really planned our sightseeing, other than we will have to do a bateau-mouche and the Eiffel Tower! ... I did notice in the bookshop there are several guides which are really about Disneyland Paris but have a section on what to do on a couple-of-days-in-Paris extra trip - have a look? - those would probably be an ideal overview of everything there is which appeals to children.

Time Out Paris I'll probably have a look at nearer the time, too.

Hi Bink! Good to see you back online. All fine here....other than the fact that it is over 100 outside and forecast to continue at that level until the weekend. Whew!

Anyway - I've kept this website tucked away for future reference. It might provide you with some useful information for the trip. But, as you are the resident Mumsnet website/link doyenne, you may already know of it!

Nothing beats personal experience/recommendations, but it will give you someplace to begin. I thought you'd especially like the 'recommended reading' section.

EB, you are brilliant - that's such a useful site, and no, I didn't know it! (Hope all is going wonderfully Over There, in spite of heat.)

For liliac, if helpful: I've spent hours researching hotels ... and of course with kids the sensibler & far better value thing is self-catering, whether Citadines-type apartment-hotels or ad hoc rentals. (We've booked a garret in the Marais.)

Thanks Blink and earlybird that website looks brill, we live very near the euro tunnel, so at present do not know wether the kids want to go for the day or if we will stay over, thanks for your help though.

We are just back, took 7yr old ds. Stayed in St Germain, as great to walk to so many places, stayed in Hotel Regent, rue Dauphine, just near Pont Neuf, so easy to get to from Odeon metro, if you are coming in from Gare du Nord, or easy for the RER train direct from Charles de Gaulle airport.

First afternoon we walked to Pompidou and Notre Dame. Lots of restaurants and shops near the hotel.

2nd day, we walked to Louvre (10mins) to see Mona Lisa, which ds was disappointed with, as she was so small! He loved the amazing ceilings in the museum. From there we caught the no95 bus up to Monmartre to the Sacre Couer. (lots of buses go from Louvre so a good place to be near to). Climbed up the spiral stone staircase to get right up to the top, which ds loved. Fantastice views!

3rd day, was the Eiffel Tower, I think everyone in France was there, it took 90mins to queue, and we arrived at 10.15am. I would suggest skipping breakfast, getting there when it opens at 9am, and having breakfast afterwards, or get a crossaint/pain au chocolat in the cafe on stage 1. Despite the queue, ds loved it, it is so HUGE and awesome, we went to level, 2, not the very very top.

Onto a batobus back to St Germain. Batobus don't do commentary, the bigger ones do the full tour and full commentary. Batobus you can get 1 day/2 day tickets, and it does a loop of about 8 stops of the main sights. It's really good.

Can recommend Printemps store in the centre, amazing cafe on the 9th floor, again with great views. Toy department was appreciated by ds after so much culture!

The PAUL chain of boulangerie/cafes are really good for breakfasts, and amazing types of bread and pastries, they seemed to be in all the main places.
