Child free in the USA...where to go?

If you had eight days child free in America what would you do? Our children are going to a Camp in North Carolina and we are wondering how best to spend our time. DH used to work there but as over 20 years ago. I’ve never been. The plan is to spend the following fortnight touring with our kids. Where should we go during those three weeks that’s a bit different (we are definitely not a Disney type family). Thanks!

A wild card- Nova Scotia, lots of history lots of outdoor stuff, perfect size for two weeks, not too hot, not too cold.

If you stay roughly in NC or neighbouring states you really can do a lot of outdoor activities. The Appalachian Trail for a start! The Appalachian area is famous for its music but it’s not the same as Nashville. You could certainly look at Tennessee but NO is hot, humid and not worth the effort in my opinion when you have better options nearby or in NC. It’s an area not visited by Brits who tend to do the obvious holiday areas. Americans know their backyard a bit better and the small towns, hiking and lodging in NC, Virginia and around is superb.

I totally agree with your sentiments over LV or similar. Just avoid! We had to go there for one night and never again! Natural areas are so much better.

NO = New Orleans.

I'm assuming that you will be there in the summer OP? If that's the case then no way would I go to New Orleans - it's stinking hot and humid and it smells really bad in summer. TBH, the whole of the Eastern seaboard is hot and humid at that time of year, so I'd aim to either head into the mountains (some lovely NPs in NC and VA), or head to the beach. The Outer Banks of North Carolina are one of my favourite places in summer, but they're very much just a string of sandbars and beach towns. You can eat great seafood, drink good cocktails, do watersports and just hang out and have a relaxing time. Otherwise, I'd recommend heading north to Virginia and doing some of the plantation houses and some walks in the woods. All lovely in summertime.

Nashville is great, loads to do, lots of great live music and great food.

I would recommend Charleston and Savannah and other parts of the Low Country South, especially the barrier islands) although it will be hot. (I assume you are going in the summer months since you mention camp for the kids.)

Try Great Smoky Mountain National Park and Shenandoah National Park. Great for hiking and cooler in summer.

Zafferana - love OBX - we have family a few hours from there, glorious place... even without Richard Gere in situGrin

Been to New Orleans recently and its my favourite place in the US so far. I would do NOLA, Nashville, Vegas then somewhere with natural beauty and nature.
