This summer we had the best holiday - We did a 3 center trip to the French alps staying in Annecy (campsite) chamonix (Airbnb) and Samoëns (self catering with pool) . Would LOVE to do similar next year but reluctant to repeat same ! Any suggestions on places to base where we could do a couple of moves (up to 90 mins apart) - looking At French alps but Austria /Italy also appeals (as does Switzerland but think too expensive?!) TIA

I have spent a lot of time in the Italian Alps and love the area very much but this year we went a bit further East and visited the Italian Dolomites.
Simply breath taking.
Lots to do there as well.

Guillestre is a lovely french town close to Briancon and settle chevalier. Lovely swimming lake close by. Plenty of campsites and accommodation

Following and also recommending Slovenia! We stayed at lake bled this year, visited lake bohinji and Vogel ski station. Was fab.

We motorhomed around the Swiss Alps recently. Stopped in Lauterbrunnen for a few days. Stunningly beautiful but there are a lot of tourists. If you don't mind it being busy, then it might work for you, the public transport links are very good if you don't feel like taking the car out each day..

If you like cycling and walking, then you could combine with somewhere in the Porte du Soleil. My favourite Swiss village is Champèry, have been many times A proper chocolate box Swiss village with a cable car and fantastic cycling and walking. It has a pool and ice rink, plus good restaurants. There are thermal spas nearby too, and several treetop adventure places. Yes, it is expensive, but if you self cater, that makes a huge difference. Also, the train goes right into the village, so again, no need to drive. If you can be there on Swiss national Day, there's loads going on, we've been up in helicopters and tandem paragliding!

Grindelwald and that whole area around the Eiger is the bollocks! I absolutely loved it there.

We just got back from Seefeld mr Innsbruck in Austria. Absolutely stunning and loads to do. We rented a chalet with a heated pool - it was amazing.

The lakes region in Austria is lovely. We have stayed in the mountains and lake on different trips. Our favourite is lake is Ossiach as it’s less touristy. Surrounds have the usual mountain activities - summer tobogganing, tree adventures, carting , paragliding. Lovely mountain top lake near ossiach too. We’ve combined this with Lake Constance and europa Park. Also with the Italian Dolomites/Venice.

Zell am See and surrounds are beautiful too but the lakes are much colder as it’s much higher up.

I third Slovenia. One of the best summer holidays I've had and the mountains were stunning. Stayed here but visited Bled, Bohinj, Ljubljana.

Slovenia is such a clean, green, uncluttered country and hasn't really been "discovered" by vast quantities of British tourists yet - just lovely.

Now I want to go back there!

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 01/09/2019 22:34

Kranjska Gora is in the Julian Alps by the way, and is a stone's throw from the point where the three countries (Slovenia, Italy and Austria) meet, so offers plenty of potential for an exciting three-centre holiday.

BeardedMum · 02/09/2019 13:43

Slovenia sounds great. We love swimming in the lake but also water parks/ pools. Any recommendations for places to stay near a water park in Slovenia?

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 02/09/2019 21:42

This hotel linked to the Aquapark is near Lake Bohinj. Can't personally vouch for the hotel but Lake Bohinj and its surrounding landscape is gorgeous.

Thank you. Love this alp appreciation thread!

I wouldn’t recommend Zell am See - it is so much more expensive than any other Austrian resort as it is a huge holiday resort for VERY rich Arab families. And in the summer is absolutely heaving.

Ramsau am Dachstein was a good holiday and I’m in love with the Dolomites/Südtirol part of Italy. So much walking to do and such a beautiful combination of the German & Italian influences
