February half term snow holiday

Planning on going on holiday with my mum early 70s and DC aged 12 and 9 Feb half term. Mum wants to go somewhere with snow. Not bothered about skiing allow it’s possible the DC might like to try. I have no desire to at all. Any ideas for non-skiing Winter holiday in February? Preferably self-catering for the space.

would something like this work for you in Tornio, Finland? it is very likely you will get snow there and its got shops etc nearby

When you say snow, does she envisage a chalet on the side of a mountain, or more a town setting?

Just been chatting with my mum. She had been talking about ski resorts but iIthink that is too expensive. I have suggested Centre Parcs in Bavaria, Yelloh holiday park in French and Innsbruck. She is happy to consider any of those. Somewhere with cold snowy walks and pool and sauna. I think the suggestion of Finland above may be out as we are in the SW and mum wants to go from a regional airport so that limits us.

Innsbruck or Salzburg would be snowy and nice to walk around in February and there should be lots of flights at that time of year.

Salzburg isn’t necessarily snowy as it’s low. It wasn’t when I went in February. The airport is there and you travel up to the Austrian ski areas from there.

The problem is you cannot just dip in and out of lessons for DC. Most ski schools are for 6 days. You also might need a lift pass and ski equipment and clothing for the DC if they get onto the pistes. That’s s big expense. At half term you are 100% peak season. Nowhere decent will be cheap. Ski resorts don’t have much to do for non skiers. I’m one! I spent years collecting DC from ski lessons!

The other thing to bear in mind is that ski resorts don’t clear pavements or de ice like we do. It’s slippery.

If your DC are not mad about skiing, I would suggest you see if you can do a long weekend at a Christmas Market in a city. Not sure about school, but it would be cheaper.

Finland would be ultra cold. DD skied with DH in Norway one year and it was Very Cold. I’m not sure your mum is being realistic. Certainly ski resorts and ski lessons cost a lot in that week. Is she paying? The exchange rate is now dire too and Austria and Switzerland are mega expensive, especially the latter.
