To be honest, I didn't think Italy was exactly full of things for children, partly because they don't consider children to be odd things which need special treatment. However, you'll have a great time and there's a few things around - will you have a car? Tirrenia is between Pisa and Livorno isn't it?

There's a theme park at Donoratico south of Livorno. Didn't go but the leaflet looked ok. And there are a few aqua parks around - one near Cecina, again the other side of Livorno but should only take 45 minutes or so by car.

I started a thread some time ago about things to do in Florence and some kind person there suggested Green Park near Pisa. Again we didn't go but it sounded good. I'll pull out the link if you want.

And another kind person (Califrau I think) recommended going to Lucca and hiring a bike to cycle round the (wide) walls. This was really great and they do them with trailers on the back for smaller children. We all really enjoyed that.

Parco di Pinocchio was crap though. I wouldn't bother tbh. I'd go to Montecatini Terme, ride on the merry go round then get the funicular up the mountain to Montecatini Alto, where there's not much, but there's a really nice square to have lunch.

And the food's fab. I'm very jealous.

Sound great peaches - to be honest i'm not sure that I want to hire a car with a 22 month od in tow- though i'd use trains and go and visit places - Lucca sounds ok. Someone MUST have been to tirrenia and can give me an idea what it's like !!!

Trains will be fine in Italy (though I'd give Siena a miss if you're setting out from Pisa... involves changing at Empoli and hanging around for ages IME - though it must be said that my experience is now ... eeek... 20 years old!). If using the train, do not forget to stamp (validate) your ticket in the machines on the platform BEFORE you get on the train.

It used to be possible to get the bus from Siena to places on the coast (used to go to Marina di Grosseto or Castiglione della Pescaia; would recommend the latter).

Personally, I wouldn't bother going looking for things specifically 'for' the kids (though there are bound to be little play parks with swings and things in seasidey places). I'd just go where you want to do and let them charge about and eat ice-cream and whatever...! Have fun!

Hmm... that was ungrammatical. Sorry - v. tired. Hope you knew what I meant.

PS Haven't been to Tirrenia, so can't give specific advice.

PPS If you're on the coast, you'll have everything you need to keep the kids happy... buckets, spades, swimming costumes and bob's your uncle.

Only 20 mins? I swear it felt like hours I spent on that platform!
