It's difficult, especially if you have a sweaty baby to begin with.

What's the age of your dd?

kslatts · 06/08/2007 13:50

Where are you going?

SweetyDarling · 06/08/2007 13:59

If it's 47 degrees then you can't make her or yourself comfortable. I've only expereinced temps that hot once (in Aus) and it was horrible. You can't go outside at all. Earlier in the day (about 10.30) we tried to go for a swim at the beach, but the sand was too hot to walk on even wearing flip-flops (got actual blister burns from where the sand stuck to skin).
Heat like that doesn't tend to last long in most places though - where will you be?

I was in the S of France in 2003 when it reached 45, we were staying in a house with no aircon but htere was shady terrace and a pool. We didn't do much, just sat in the shade until too hot then jumped in the pool. Dd was about 10 months, didn't seem to bother her, she just slept in her nappy. Fans are essential though

dd is 4 so not baby and its cyprus we're going to..todays forcast shows its cooler, but temp has been averaging 38+ over last few months now so am expecting hot!

Cool shower just before bed will really help, especially if you leave hair damp. Other than that, stick to shade during the day, carry a brolly if needs must. TBH it does look like it's cooling down in Europe now. Have a nice hol.

Tigana · 06/08/2007 14:33

Avoid being out in aforementioned blistering sunshine.
Stick as far as possible to shady areas ( or but a sun shade/sun tent/big parasol and take your shade with you)
Wear hats.
Lots of fluids (not so much alcohol)
Jump in pool to cool off.
Try to plan day to avoid being out across the hottest time around midday.

Some days when I was in Spain (last week) it touched 40 degrees, 5 year old DD didn't seem to notice and played happily. DS who is 7 months got prickly heat and with no bloody air con, there was no respite from the heat. He only wore a nappy night and day for 2 weeks as clothes made him more sweaty. The worst culprit was his UV suit. We kept him out of the sun of course and whenenver we walked around we used his shade-a-babe.

We are going to Zante in 2 weeks time, my friend lives over there and emailed me to say they had a heatwave a couple of weeks ago, but it has now started cooling down so hopefully won't be unbearable when we are there. I have 2 dd's (7 and 5).

Hope you have a good hoiday.

PinkChick · 06/08/2007 17:41

thanks every one..i've bought that cooling gel for when you burn, but its a nice coolant even if your very warm, i also bought that naf advertised cool spray(cant remember name?)but that worked quite well in uk last summer when hot.. wetting her hair before we go out in morn/night will help like you say and have bought a batery operated fan for her(we'll get ther about 5 in morn so hopefully wont be to uncomfortable while were lugging suitcases and tired dd around!)

we went to zante before we had dd and loved it..go out early and walk along beach when its cooler, you may see the turtles checking on their eggs..although IIRC, even at 7am in morn then(we went in july) it was scorching!

When I go somewhere hot I take a hot water bottle with me , fill it with ice cold water and stick my feet on it. Strange but true

PinkChick · 07/08/2007 14:50

LOL but good thinking!..was thinking things like wrist bands(sweat bands) and soaking them then putting them on dd..with them being on oressure points that always helps with me?..would those cool n soothe forhead strips work to lower body temp due to heat not illness????

second what everyone else has suggested, lots of shade, plan to be somewhere with air con in the hottest part of the day (approx 12-4), hang out at the pool a lot but with seats in the shade when you aren't in the water.. um..with my ds (3 months) if I HAVE to go out when it's hot I take a wet flannel in a sandwich bag and just wipe him down on his face/arms/legs really often, wetting his hair so he stays cool.

PinkChick · 13/08/2007 12:53

thanks for that, have just put flannel in case for that sole reason now
