Holidaying alone with kids

Hi everyone!

I'm thinking of going abroad next year just me and 6yo DS. I've only been abroad twice in my adult life and we've always gone with my parents, I'm considering going away just us two next year and I'm a little bit nervous.

I worry DS will find it boring with just me and that I'll miss adult company, although we do tend to make friends easily!

I'm tempted to go back to where we went this year with my parents so at least the area is familiar for us so there isn't as much trouble getting used to the area etc.

What've your experiences been like?

I think we'll have a great time when we are there, it's just the thought of it is a bit daunting!

Also, would you aim to go somewhere targeted at kids and families or not really?

Where we went this year it had a small kids pool and there were about 4 kids in the hotel at the time which was fine

I'm in Ireland but this year I used one parent holidays for my holiday with two dc, it worked out that we met a lovely woman & her daughter & did many activities together & ate together at night. Maybe you could look at something like this?

Your ds will be happy just to be on holiday and have you to himself though equally

It will be fine! With my eldest DD I was a single parent for 10 years and we went all over the place together. If you’re pretty fresh to travelling abroad I agree that a company specialising in single parent holidays and somewhere there will be lots of kids so some of the entertainment pressure is off you would be best. Having said that, you will in all likelihood find it cheaper to book directly yourself. Use Skyscanner, Kayak or Google Flights to find the cheapest flights. I use booking.com to book most accommodation and then check reviews on Tripadvisor - that will give you an idea of whether the hotel tends to attract families as well as giving you first hand info about location, cleanliness etc. Both my DD (I met my DH when eldest DD was 10) hated kids clubs, I hate lying around all day and what worked for us was more adventurous holidays with lots of going exploring and activities, pure DD and me time! Iceland and Canada were our favourites. What I would really really recommend though is getting a room with a balcony that you can retreat to when they are getting to sleep/sleeping otherwise the evenings can seem very long!
