Do you really have to wear swimming hats in hotel pools in Portugal?

This kind of puts me off - do they actually apply this?

I don't know, but if you find out you do, you can get lycra ones from Amazon. About £7 for a pack of 4.

AdmiralButterfly · 19/08/2019 23:27

It's not the cost, it's the fighting with the kids every time they get into the pool

We went to an All Inclusive hotel in Portugal last year no one was wearing swimming hats.

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 19/08/2019 23:30

Nope!

TwoPupsandaHamster · 19/08/2019 23:31

I've never worn a swimming hat in Portugal. I don't know anyone else who has either. Is this some new kind of phenomena??

LittleAndOften · 19/08/2019 23:32

I've been to lots of European resorts where hats are compulsory like Switzerland, Germany, France - and speedos for men too. But they do a fabric type hat rather than the tight rubber ones. As a child on holiday I remember making the decision I'd rather swim than sulk about a hat - especially as everyone was wearing them. I do think it depends on the individual resort though.

You do in municipal pools but not usually in hotel pools, I’ve never seen it, which is not to say it isn’t required in a minority.

AlunWynsKnee · 19/08/2019 23:33

Not in a hotel pool.

Sparrowlegs248 · 19/08/2019 23:34

@AdmiralButterfly the lycra ones are much more comfortable, and easier to put on, than the standard rubbery ones.

LightDrizzle · 19/08/2019 23:37

It’s called a touca, chinelas (flip flops or sliders) tend to be required in the same places that require a swimming hat,
I don’t think you’ll need them in a hotel used to international tourists.

Thanks all

At expensive hotels, you normally wear a hat in the indoor pool but not outdoor pools. They are fabric ones. Totally crap at keeping hair dry.,

Leapyearlover · 20/08/2019 00:03

They're not meant to keep hair dry just out of the way!

ourkidmolly · 20/08/2019 11:16

No they're not for keeping hair out of the way. They are meant to keep the pool water cleaner but don't as they fall off incessantly and have zero grip.

Catnuzzle · 20/08/2019 12:31

We had to in our hotel pool earlier this year. They seem a bit pointless and they were fabric ones purchased from the hotel rather than plastic ones

NotWavingButMNing · 20/08/2019 14:14

I've never seen them in Portugal only Germany. I think if that's the custom or rule then visitors should respect it.
Was recently in Hungary where those little fabric hats are compulsory, it seemed the only people not wearing them were Brits. Hmm

CottonSock · 20/08/2019 14:17

I had too at a hotel in Lisbon (indoor). Plus we had to pay for them

Leapyearlover · 20/08/2019 14:28

Ourkidmolly- out of the way of other swimmers AND out of the filters. I always wear one and it never falls off. Sounds like you have the wrong size.

Hoppinggreen · 20/08/2019 18:56

Many public pools in Spain ask you to wear them

AdmiralButterfly · 20/08/2019 19:29

I messaged hotel to ask and they said only in the spa pool not the main outside pool

fuzzyduck1 · 23/08/2019 05:51

We were in a hotel and they said you needed a hat in the indoor pool don’t know about the outdoor one didn’t try it it was December.

olympicsrock · 23/08/2019 05:52

Last time in Spain we needed one for the indoor pool.

stucknoue · 23/08/2019 06:42
