Madeira - anyone been hiking?

Contemplating a walking holiday to Madeira next year. I’ve been reading about the Levadas/trails by water channels and it looks really good.

Have been googling but am wading through excursion company websites. Don’t want any form of organised trip. Was wondering if anyone can recommend a good base near to some good Levadas?

It's great, definitely do it.

We went a few years ago and were based near Funchal. The island is not that big, so you can get to most parts of the island fairly easily from there. The eastern side is quite dry and has strikingly coloured cliffs, while the western side is greener and has higher mountains. Just don't take anyone who doesn't like heights ( my mum declined all levada walks after the first one).

Our hotel put us in touch with a reasonably priced taxi driver, he dropped us off at the start of each trail and picked us up at the end. The walks are pretty easy to find as they just follow the levadas. We were fine with a guidebook and some internet prep.

Happy to help with any specific questions.

Thank you.

That’s good to know about the taxi drivers. I’d also read about the buses being quite regular. I did read that hiring a car isn’t a good idea as then you can only do circular walks.

Will buy a guidebook and get planning. Were the walks steep? Can you plan to walk downhill rather than uphill if only going one way?

Taxi driver v good idea as we found many walls were one way. Do need a head for heights.

Try to make sure you have up to date info. Some of them are pretty straight forward, some are a bit more challenging. And up to date information in case there are particular problems with specific ones. I think some of the higher ones are recommended that you start high.

We didn't try the buses as the taxi wasn't that expensive, so can't comment on that option.

From memory I think most of the walks were fairly unchallenging (middle bit of the island), with most of them being downhill. I'm not an Olympic athlete (office job, occasional runs at moderate pace) and was completely fine.

The western side has the steeper terrain, so if you wanted to up the difficulty a little you could just move westward.

Btw I really recommend the walk to the far eastern end of the island. Very dramatic scenery and very doable with some basic fitness.

VivaLeBeaver · 17/08/2019 20:11

I do quite a bit of running and gym classes as well as hill walking in the U.K. so fitness should be ok. I just have recollections of doing a very steep and very hot gorge hike in Tenerife years ago which was made so much harder because of the heat.

We went to Madeira in May this year. I agree that you will need a taxi. We found it quite difficult to do much levada walking as everyone said that many were too challenging to not be in a party. I suspect that they were trying to sell a tour. I'm not sure that the buses take you to the start/end point of levadas, so a taxi is the best option. We had a taxi for a day, and he dropped us off at one point of a levada and met us further on.

If you can I really recommend going on a dolphin/whale watching boat trip. It was amazing.

The levadas are spread across the island so no one good place. Most base themselves in Funchal or the Lido area and go from there. You can get to some walks by bus but not all.

PR 11 is a short beginners levadas walk.
PR 1.2 is a mountain walk and lasts about 2.5 hrs
PR 6 and 6.1 takes several hours and is the most popular on the island. That's a levada walk.
PR 8 is a coastal walk but if it's been raining you'll need wellies or something.

I was there earlier this month and looked at all the walks and the ones I listed are the ones generally considered the most popular or the best.

I went whale watching in Tenerife and even though the sea was as calm as anything I spent two hours puking. Never going on a boat again!

Would suggest getting the Cicerone guidebook/ ebook version. Usually cheapest direct from their website.

The only place that is really practical as a base if you are using buses is Funchal. But even then the options for walks using buses is very limited.

Some of the walks have helluva steep drops, so you really do need a head for heights and some confidence.

While the scenery is stunning and I undoubtedly missed out on most of the best walks by relying only on public transport, I am not sure I would go back. I much preferred North Tenerife for walking, buses regular, plentiful and very cheap. A number of places you could base yourself, from small coastal villages to larger towns (La Laguna) and have access to regular buses, shops, restaurants etc.
Similar scenery, but more variety of walks and I much preferred La Laguna as a place vs Funchal. Madeira was also cloudy and wet in the mountains when I was there even when it was sunny in Funchal and weather was very unpredictable.

Also like the look of La Gomera and La Palma for hiking holidays...

If you do go to Madeira, the very short and easy Levada walk from the bus that stops at the trout farm and the descent to Nuns Valley from the bus that stops at the viewpoint/hotel were my 2 favourite walks that you can easily do by bus from Funchal.

You can also look at the Macs Adventure self guided walking holidays website for ideas for walks and if you read the reviews people often say what their favourite walks were.

"Also like the look of La Gomera and La Palma for hiking holidays"

I like the look of them as well. We did the walk from the trout farm BTW. We were very lucky with the weather this year, even when we went up into the mountains. It was as clear as a bell. I was expecting low lying cloud in the peaks and dressed accordingly. I regretted it as it was warm and sunny all day.
