Hotels where teens pay child prices?

Just come back from holiday in Spain and already dreaming of next year's.
I usually book directly with the hotel.

DC will be 13 and 15 and am struggling to find anywhere where they don't pay adult prices, making it hugely expensive.

The main problem is that many hotels don't have rooms for 4 adults, so 2 rooms = double the cost.

I looked at one middle of the road hotel and it would be 8000 Euros for a week!

Does anyone know anywhere where where kids are kids till they are 16 or 18?

I don't know of any hotel that accepts over-12s at under-12 prices, I'm afraid. But maybe you can find something affordable if you adjust aspects of the holiday.

What are your parameters and red lines? Obviously school holidays.

Must it be Spain, or are you open to other countries?

Do you want to be by the beach, and is that a must? Would inland or a lake do?

Maybe a villa or apartment would be cheaper than a hotel; you could still eat out if you don't want to self cater. Are hotel facilities a must?

Sometimes package deals can be cheaper as they can get bulk discounts - worth pricing it out anyway, and then seeing if a hotel will match a price. Two separate rooms can also be cheaper than a family room as the latter tend to be in short supply.

I think that's just part and parcel of the kids growing up tbh. You just have to find a holiday that fits your family. We always went for villa/apartment once the DC got to the teens.

There are family rooms which are basically 2 hotel rooms with the connecting door unlocked which aren’t double the cost. It’s worth emailing to ask if the option isn’t available online.

E.g Fuerte hotels

I don’t know anywhere which treats 12+ as a child for food purposes.

Admittedly, I’ve only been prepared to pay for 2 hotel rooms at May Half Term in the past as opposed to July/Aug. Now, it’s S/C because we need the space from each other and no more May HT holidays due to school exams. DC are 15 & 12.

8000 for a week?? Where on Earth are you looking?! I think you may need to lower your expectations a little.

We've just got back from a really lovely hotel, 2 huge beautiful pools, close to the beach. We had a self catering apartment with a bedroom and then 2 sofa beds for kids (10 and 14) and it cost us £600 for 2 weeks through hotels.com.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 11/08/2019 10:31

Why don't you try a DIY holiday - rent an apartment and book the flights separately. We do this every year in Spain.

Mentounasc · 11/08/2019 10:37

You need to get away from the idea of a hotel and go for a self-catering villa. Friends booked a villa for two weeks on Sardinia with a private pool, 3 bedrooms, air-conditioned, mid-July, for less than 2000 euros. At that price, you can afford to eat out every evening. They found it on AirBnB or booking.com. They booked their own cheap flights on Easyjet and rented a car at the airport.

wibbletooth · 11/08/2019 10:39

I’ve just booked a Novotel and that goes up to a 15 so chances are the rest of the Accor group will do.

I think similar chains - like Marriott, Hilton, Holiday Inn etc - all go up to 15 too.

lovelyupnorth · 11/08/2019 10:42

£8000 for a week in a hotel that’s some hotel

Just done 16 days in Canada + 1 night in London’s, car hire, 2 apartments and 3 hotels with two rooms, Food, excursions including whale watching and white water rafting, and all the shopping for less than £6k for two adults and two teens - 17:18.

littlequestion · 11/08/2019 13:00

It was just one I randomly clicked on so I am sure there are cheaper but it was the 2 rooms that whacked the price up. It's AI but even so....

Doesn't have to be Spain - Portugal, Greece etc fine. We could do a villa but we like hotels because they are livelier.

@littlequestion have a look at Bulgaria. St Vlas and Nesebar are in the Sunny Beach area but far enough away from the busy strip. Nesebar is beautiful especially the old town, it's also a UNESCO world heritage site with ancient roman ruins.

We booked flights, private transfer and apartment separately, £2200 in total for 2 weeks. The exchange rate is excellent, 2.10 lev per £. Lots of places to eat and drink and lots of activities such as water parks, Jeep safaris, watersports etc.

You'll probably find your money goes a lot further!

Satsuma1234 · 11/08/2019 16:56

You need to look properly. I just looked on jet 2 website. Four of you all inclusive in loads of areas for £4K.

jesuschristwtf · 12/08/2019 23:13

but they are not children anymore - you should be paying the higher price... maybe look at less touristy places. might be cheaper. or even air bnb? self catering?

Branleuse · 12/08/2019 23:16

Go to a cheaper area, or go in the may or october holiday to cut costs.
Other ideas are a caravan or safari tent. Eurocamp have some lovely modern ones.

DD is 16 and browsing I found a 5 star hb for both of us (package) in Croatia next August for just under £2000 Inc flights.
It's not the age, it's the room as others have said.
We shared a room in a Holiday Inn this year in the centre of Madrid and paid £40 a night

HI, Novotel and all the big chains will do family rooms.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 02/10/2019 13:18

Why not go for an apartment, that way you can have 2 rooms but still have the lively activities to go to.

PandaTurtle · 02/10/2019 13:26

We've booked one for summer that does - its in Borneo though. Full board for 4, hotel and 4 wildlife river trips £450 for 2 nights for 2 adults, 13 and 14 year old.

Came across others on Booking.com but agree its shooting up the cost.

Daddylonglegs1965 · 02/10/2019 21:57

Yes like you OP we also prefer hotels as the kids have got older with more going on and possible holiday friends but with a teen boy and teen girl it’s more difficult and some prices are ridiculous.
Also the room/bed situation is often vague or it’s a double sofa bed and two single beds (which I wouldn’t consider) and would hate a tiny space with us all on top of each other.
We are starting to look at s/c apartments again but don’t want to hire a car so want things in walking distance also worried the kids might be hard work or glued to screens with nothing going on.
