Buggies on planes

Hi there,
I'm new to mumsnet so forgive me if I'm not quite up to speed with the etiquette!

We are going on holiday in September and the last twice we took DS1 away, the buggy was broken on the outward flight. We now have DS2 who will be 1 when we go and will definately need a buggy.

I have looked at both the Quinny Zapp and the Quicksmart and have been told that both can be taken on board the plane as hand luggage.

Does anyone have any experience of either of buggies? Has anyone ever taken either on as hand luggage since the rules we tightened?

Thanks in advance!

buy a cheap one as they often get damaged (aunt and stepsis have exp of)
i have a zapp and we dont get on its no good for shopping is quiet difficult to fold unfold etc my dd 14mo can tip it up no good for napping etc

RubySlippers · 03/08/2007 13:19

i have a zapp and am not keen
only plus point is that is folds up very small
but it does not recline, shopping basket a waste of time

I have a Zapp and it does fold very small and is very light (I don't have any problems folding or unfolding it but there is a real knack), so it's great for the boot of the car. It is useless for shopping though as there is no basket and you can't hang anything on the handles as it tips really easily. I always take my Bugaboo on holiday as DS has no problems sleeping in it.

I love my Zapp, but I think you either love or hate em! I know lots of people who would get rid of theirs in the drop of a hat, and others, like me, think it's a godsend (especially in my postage stamp sized house, there's no room for a mahoosive buggy) Thenonly downside is it doesn't lie flat. I have gotr over the tipping up thing by putrting buggy weights on the bottom. I find it easy to steer too bercause I am only 5ft, therefore most buggies are too high for me.

I would say it's probably best to have a cheap "holiday" buggy and take that, as meandmy suggested.
You can get a relly basic one for 15 quid from Mothercare

Otherwise, why not check out your local Freecycle, because there are ofen old strollers people are getting rid of. I got one from a freecycler (who also havppened to be an mner!) That way, you can just get rid when you get back.

Where did you get the buggy weights from IGW? I often have to pick DS up in the Zapp straight from work and can't even hang my work bag on it.

IntergalacticWalrus · 03/08/2007 13:30

I bought the buggy second hand from someone on here, and they sent the buggy weights with it.

I think yu can get them here or maybe try ebay

IntergalacticWalrus · 03/08/2007 13:31

I attach them at the boittom under the footrest where those 2 little gap thingies are.

bigcar · 03/08/2007 13:32

I don't know how your buggies got broken, but with mine it was from catching on something that broke the catch. You could always try a buggy bag, that should stop it from getting caught up with other luggage. I think they sell them in mothercare and boots, although I think the boots one is a lot more expensive but made of stronger fabric.

The Zapp comes with a v. good travel bag.

IntergalacticWalrus · 03/08/2007 13:34

That's one advantage with the zapp, is that it comes with a bag, which is qyuite surdy, so if you didn;t take it as hand luggage, you caould put it in the hold no problems

PTA · 03/08/2007 13:36

Thanks for all that. I had thought about just getting a cheap buggy but that's what I did last time and it got broken!

I can'y make my mind up about the Zapp, people do seem to either love it or hate it!

Anyone used the Quicksmart?

Thanks bigcar. The last buggy was in a bag and it seemed to have gotten pushed in or something dropped on top of it as the tublar aluminium was dented at the bottom and the wheel hanging off!

I think the Zapp is good for some things and not others. I wouldn't use it for shopping but, as I say, it does fold up small and light so it's great to have in the car.

IntergalacticWalrus · 03/08/2007 13:41

he other thing about the Zapp is that because it folds up so small it's not so vulnerable to being snapped/dented when folded as a longer buggy might be.

ScottishMummy · 03/08/2007 19:50

i use zapp for travell on planes/eurostar folds up v.small, and i got it on plane as hand luggage.but i guess any small stroller would do same job

cameroonmama · 05/08/2007 21:42

I have a good old fashioned Maclaren that has been on more planes than Richard Branson and has never yet been damaged, maybe I've just been lucky Also on longhaul flights I can usually wangle for it to be taken into the cabin.
