Or just go to the Caribbean for some wonderful islands and hotels. Even island hopping is fun!

UAEMum · 11/08/2019 04:36

Dubai is the best weather at Christmas!

Decormad38 · 11/08/2019 04:50

We went to Morocco for new year last year. It was warmish at about 22 during day but main pool was too cold to swim in. Once the sun started to go down it was freezing! Lovely holiday though.

We have done both the Dominican Republic and Mexico at Christmas and both have been fabulous. They are longer flights though.

Florida was fun too.

Oman! Beautiful country, shortish flight, great hotels, lots to see and do. Will be lovely at that time of year. I have never wanted to spend vacation time in the UAE but Oman is a different beast altogether.

Sri Lanka. I've been twice at Christmas and it was lovely!

I wouldn't feel safe going to Egypt at all now. I've been many times to all different parts and feel (or felt) comfortable there.

"The FCO advise against all but essential travel:
• to the Governorate of South Sinai, except the area within the Sharm el Sheikh perimeter barrier, which includes the airport and the areas of Sharm el Maya, Hadaba, Naama Bay, Sharks Bay and Nabq.
• by air to or from Sharm el Sheikh. See Air travell_
• to the area west of the Nile Valley and Nile Delta regions, excluding the coastal areas between the Nile Delta and Marsa Matruh (as shown on the map).
An estimated 415,000 British nationals visited Egypt in 2018. Most visits are trouble free.
Terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Egypt. Although most attacks occur in North Sinai, there is a risk of terrorist attacks across the country. Attacks could be indiscriminate, affecting Egyptian security forces, religious sites, large public gatherings and places visited by foreigners. There is a heightened threat of terrorist attacks in or around religious sites and during religious festivals, such as the month of Ramadan and the Christmas period (including Coptic Christmas), when terrorist groups have sometimes called for attacks. Terrorist attacks have occurred over local holiday weekends. Terrorists have attacked tourists in Egypt in the past. There is a heightened threat of terrorist attacks targeting Coptic Christians from extremists linked to Daesh-Sinai in Egypt."

We came back from Sri Lanka at Easter 3 days before the attacks. In truth we had a really great holiday and it’s a beautiful country. The people we met (many of who’s livelihoods directly depended on tourism) couldn’t have been nicer and more welcoming. Having said that, certain sections of the government and security agencies knew of a possible attack but due to the highly partisan nature of their State system did bugger all about it. The sheer absence of any increased security (and literally there was none at the major religious sites we visited) in retrospect given they were provided advance warnings by both the Indian and US governments is really reprehensible. I wish the country and the people well- personally though I would want to see that a lesson had been learnt from this & will leave it a few years before going back. That’s just my take on it though and yes I would go into London after an attack just on the basis that my perception (right or wrong) is that our intelligence and security forces are more ‘on it’.

It was 29 C between Christmas and New Year in Lanzarote last year.

Hot is not guaranteed for the Canaries, but it could well be, or at least very warm and is probably your best bet as there is plenty to do around the islands that don't rely on super hot weather. If you get a hotel with a heated pool, you can also swim.

Or if you go to one of the big AI hotels in Hurgarda in Egypt at least there's plenty to do on site and you can probably do some trips out.

For balance, here is the FCO advice for France cat

Terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in France.

Attacks could be indiscriminate. Due to ongoing threats to France by Islamist terrorist groups, and recent French military intervention against Daesh (formerly referred to as ISIL), the French government has warned the public to be extra vigilant and has reinforced its own domestic and overseas security measures. You should be vigilant in public places and follow the advice of local French authorities.

There have been a number of high profile terrorist attacks since 2015 across France. On 13 November 2015 terrorist attacks killed 130 and injured hundreds more at multiple sites across Paris. On 14 July 2016, 84 people were killed when a truck was driven through a crowd of people on the promenade in Nice. On 3 February 2017, a knife attack inside the Louvre museum complex in Paris injured a French soldier. The attacker was arrested. On 6 June 2017, police shot a man after he attacked a police officer with a hammer outside the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. On 23 March 2018, a man carried out various attacks in the Carcassonne area of southern France, killing 4 people. The police shot and killed the attacker.

There’s a heightened threat of terrorist attack globally against UK interests and British nationals from groups or individuals motivated by the conflict in Iraq and Syria. You should be vigilant at this time.

According to Met Office, Tenerife’s December temp is 22C with 6 hours sunshine a day.
I’ve been several times in January and had beautiful warm sun. The hotel had a heated outdoor pool that was blissful. It’s a nice short flight too, and there’s lots to do and see outside the hotel.

mizu · 12/08/2019 09:05

Agree with Tolstoy Oman! Lived there for a couple of years and would love to go back. Beautiful Star

Northernsoullover · 12/08/2019 14:22

I'm definitely tempted by Oman. In my university some students from Oman were promoting it. Accommodation seems really cheap but the flights were quite pricey. I'll take another look though.

SJane48S · 12/08/2019 15:33

Oman is great - everything Dubai isn’t! The weather will be nice at Christmas & the hotels will make an effort. Not sure how cheap the accommodation will be but you’ll get a good range anyway

stucknoue · 12/08/2019 16:07

Depends what you are looking for, if you still want turkey and the trimmings stick to the canaries because the hotels will offer it, if you just want a holiday the Middle East is warmer for not much longer flight - just be aware that it's expensive and whilst Christmas is recognised for the tourists it's not a holiday for them

Daisydoesnt · 12/08/2019 16:11

OP go to the Caribbean. We've been for just 7 nights before and it's definitely worth it. Flights to Bridgetown, Barbados are just under 9 hours. Do it!!

SJane48S · 12/08/2019 16:54

I’ve spent 5 Christmases in the Middle East and finding hotels that offer a Christmas dinner was never an issue!
