Romania

My daughter will be working in Romania for the next 6 weeks and I will be there with her as her chaperone. We have our evenings and weekends free, staying in the capital Budapest.

First question, is it safe to leave the hotel in an evening? My daughter is 10 if that makes any difference. Is it cheap to eat out? I think we do get some expenses paid but I don't want to eat in the hotel every night. Where can we visit at the weekend within walking distance from the city centre? How much spending money per day would you anticipate we need?

Thanks in advance.

Your 10 year old is working on Romania for the next 6 weeks ?

justgotbanned · 08/08/2019 18:45

Yes. But that wasn't the question, I wanted to know about Romania?

Romania’s amazing! Cant speak for Bucharest as we visited Cluj and lots of villages around there and also Constanta so may be different (big city).

However the people are so so kind welcoming and funny, the food is amazing and costs are very very low. The areas we went were very safe too.

If you have any aptitude for languages - any experience with Romance languages - I would really recommend learning a bit of Romanian, it’s pretty easy and goes a very long way with people.

Again I can’t really speak for Bucharest on cost, safety but just wanted to express that Romania is a fantastic country and not somewhere to be afraid of.

@Poolrefusers that's a great article, thank you! Yes, she will be acting.

So good to hear people are friendly, I'd hate to think we were stuck in our hotel room night after night.

@Christmastree43 thank you, so very reassuring. I've had a look at the article above and that gives some key words/phrases so I will be swotting up!

We recently had 3 nights in Bucharest. One night too many imo. It just isn't very interesting. We didn't feel unsafe, and it is cheap.

We had a family weekend in Bucharest last Christmas. It felt very safe and clean, and the people were lovely and friendly. Food and drink is reasonably priced. We had a great time and would recommend it to anyone.

Bucharest is a bit of a dump.

Transylvania, on the other hand is beautiful! I'd try to get away from the city if you can.

areukiddingme · 09/08/2019 22:53

OP, have you heard of trip advisor!

justgotbanned · 11/08/2019 18:02

@areukiddingme yes, I also post on trip advisor. But it doesn't answer the questions above so if you have any knowledge, please feel free to add comment.

I've been to Bucharest and have a bit of affection for it. It's quite an odd mix of architecture, largely due to Ceausescu's mad vision of what a city should look like, mixed with some grand old buildings. I feel completely safe there, but I did get approached by a scruffy man claiming to be the 'Tourist Police' the first time, I told him to go away and he did. My second visit was ten years later (2015) and the city felt like it'd been spruced up a bit. It's no beauty though, overall. There's an admittedly very touristy restaurant in Bucharest that's quite fun - Caru' cu bere. Yes, prices for food/drink are very reasonable.

Thank you everyone. We are here now and we ventured out of the hotel tonight into central Bucharest this afternoon with a view to having a lovely evening meal. But of course my daughter clocked both KFC and McDonald's and wouldn't be swayed! We are here for a few weeks so I'm hoping we can try some local cuisines - the local beer is quite nice :)
