Cosmetics and liquids on board a 'plane....

lulumama · 02/08/2007 13:50

Security update Aug 06: Hand baggage must not contain any liquids or products made from constituted liquids* with the exception of prescription medicines and medical items sufficient and essential for the flight (please bring prescriptions with you). For those travelling with infants, baby food and milk sufficient and essential for the flight is allowed and must be tasted by the accompanying passenger.

*including any cosmetics, perfumes, gels, toothpastes and aerosols

just copied and pasted off monarch's website

we are off on hols soon, so just checking what we can and can't take

am getting letter for DSs epipen

now, if no cosmetics allowed, does that mean i cannot take a lipstick or mascara in my hand luggage?!?!?!

and re milk....DD is 2, so has cows milk, if i take milk in a bottle for her, as i have an insulated bottle carrier, which will keep it cold...but if i take a carton of formula instead, does it have to be opened and tasted before flying? or can it remain sealed until she is thirsty?

It sounds to me like their info is out of date were now in Aug 07 . I think you are now allowed small bottles (less than 100ml) but not half empty large bottles, and things like one tube of lippie, 1 mascara etc are OK, and they all have to be in a small transparent bag. They didn't take my lippie and mascara off me at Bristol airport at Easter (although they did confiscate my unopened bottle of evian). I had to taste the water in the bottles I took for dd, but they weren't bothered about the a squidgy packet of ella's kitchen puree, and they didn't make me open those.

Have a look at this dept of transport link here

Roskva · 02/08/2007 14:42

oops, lost part of my post, I also had a jar of baby food I didn't have to open

lilolilmanchester · 02/08/2007 20:29

I flew on business last week and checked this out at Heathrow Airport for a MNetter who was concerned about taking babymilk.
Roskva's advice is correct. Lipgloss, pastes and creams, and cigarette lighters, (not sure about mascara, would stick it in the bag) also have to be put in a sealable clear plastic bag, strict size limitation for bag, (small sandwich bag), and no containers can be greater than 100ml, no matter how much is left in them. You can get the bags at security - or certainly can at Manchester, Heathrow and Southampton. Baby milk is exempt from 100ml rule, you can take what is a " reasonable amount for the flight" and they said you will still be asked to taste it so take a cup/bottle rather than a sealed carton. Once through security, you can buy cartons of milk/ water etc. Also nothing sharp in handluggage, but think that's been in place since 0911.

lilolilmanchester · 02/08/2007 20:33

Oh, some airports insist on you taking your shoes off so they can put them through the scanner. Don't do what I did last week and travel in a skirt, long boots, with patterned socks (cos I thought no-one would see them and I get too sweaty travelling in tights) and ... unshaved legs. Horrendous.

skirmish · 02/08/2007 20:35

i took steralised water pre-measured in 2 bottles, and also large amounts in 2 big bottles, plus powder and cartons and was only asked to taste one of the large bottles of water. Didn't need to test/taste anything else - had things like vaseline, nappy cream, medised etc - just follow the 100ml rule for everything other than milk, and put everything in ziploc plastic bags

lulumama · 03/08/2007 19:32

thanks very much

much appreciated

this sort of thing makes me sooo anxious , don;t want to get it wrong!

where can i get ziploc bags

OP posts:
Scootergrrrl · 03/08/2007 19:34

Sainsburys have them - although when we flew yesterday I just put everything in a non-sealable bag and it was fine. You don't want to get the jobsworth though!

lulumama · 03/08/2007 20:00

i would get the jobsworth.. i know it !

have not even thought about packing clothes or anything like that, just obssessing about the plastic bag for my lipgloss!

OP posts:
skirmish · 03/08/2007 20:02

got my ziploc bags from the pound-shop - they are quite big, so very handy. They do have them available at the airport, so if worse comes to the worse, chuck it in the bag, and then transfer to ziploc bag when you get there

lulumama · 03/08/2007 20:03

thank you!

OP posts:
skirmish · 03/08/2007 20:07

don't fret too much about it - they seem to be very patient and kind to people travelling with children (or i may have just looked like i needed pity ) - but, then again, i was by myself with a 5mth old!

Scootergrrrl · 03/08/2007 20:33

Put your lipgloss in your suitcase and just deal with the baby stuff - less stress and you can nip into duty free and use their testers if you feel bare!!

lilolilmanchester · 03/08/2007 20:40

I've not been to an aiport yet where they haven't got the bags, and I've flown a lot this year. So just put your essential liquids in whatever bag you've got as skirmish suggests and swap them over just before you go through security. Where are you flying from?

lulumama · 04/08/2007 10:12

we're flying from manchester

OP posts:
peanutbear · 04/08/2007 10:30

who are you flying with Lulu

Nbg · 04/08/2007 10:34

lulu, just come back from Germany and flew from Manchester.

They handed out clear bags just before you go through security.
We had 2 bottles, one with water in and one with formula milk in and a sports bottle with water in.

We put them all in clear bags and all we had to do was have a sip after they had gone through the scanner. They wouldnt let us take the sports bottle with water through but all they did was dispense some into an empty smaller beaker we had and threw the rest out.

I also managed to take through my hefty make up bag with no problems and it also had tweezers in which they didnt pick up on.

suwoo · 04/08/2007 10:46

Lulu, I've just come back from hols and I was getting as panicky as you about all the rules and the bags etc. I didn't realise stupid DH had put my make up bag in the hand luggage, luckily the lady seemed to take pity on me when she saw my look of abject horror at the thought of all my cosmetics being seized. I had the little benefit jars (benetint etc) but as other posters have said you are OK if they are under 100ml. I had to taste the 3 bottles of baby milk I had taken (all exactly 100ml) but didn't have to bother with the baby food I had made and taken with me. The bag nightmare was the only thing I could think about on the run up to the holiday!! On the way back (spain) they couldn't have given a shit, what we had. Although we had to pay 60Euro for 8 kilos excess bloody luggage

lulumama · 04/08/2007 11:43

thakns so much

lulumama, I flew from Manchester last week. Anything else you need to know, just incase I know the answer?

lulumama · 04/08/2007 13:05

erm, are the shops good !?!? years since i flew from there

i think that is it really, but thanks for the help !

OP posts:
peanutbear · 04/08/2007 13:10

liquids in single containers up to 100ml inc lipsticks must in a resealable clear plastic bag in hand luggage

you can carry babys milk as much as nessacary to get through the flight but you must taste it or DH says buy it from boots when you have gone through security

if you take it in a sealed container through security you have to open it to taste it

HTH ask any questions you like !!!

DH says where are you going if you are going to the USA rules are different

P>S we have security bags if you want some

lulumama · 04/08/2007 13:18
