Planning next year’s holiday. Ds is desperate to go to America. I’d like to go to New York. Dh just doesn’t want to do theme parks.

So thinking a few days in New York and then beach resort somewhere. But where?

We went to Greenport which is on the north fork of long island so less pricey than the Hamptons after a few days in New York a couple of years back. It was really lovely. Small town, good restaurants, nice harbour we stayed at the cliffside resort conods which had a pool and a private stretch of beach with the best sunsets. You would need a car, we picked one up in Manhattan (I just looked for the branch nearest the main road we would need to get on to drive out the city) and dropped it off at JFK before flying home. I found the driving out of the city absolutely fine, took us about 2 and half hours to drive to Greenport and felt like we were a world away from New York. It was an amazing holiday, probably my favourite ever.

NYC then get the Acela Express out of NYC to Boston,,Boston is a great city to visit..so much to see and do..Then cape Cod? beautiful area with lovely towns and beaches.. Thinking about it you could fly to NYC...do NYC then do Boston and fly home from Boston fitting in a trip to cape Cod somehow?? /i know a lovely B and B in Boston :)

Arnoldthecat that’s the plan. Fly into NYC drive round the coast to somewhere on the coast and then drive to Boston and fly back from there

Bermuda! Just at hours flight from NYC and it's beautiful - punk beaches great food and hospitality. Can fly back to UK from there too.

We did a few nights in NY, flew to Cape Cod with Jet Blue (flights were very reasonable and an amazing view flying up the coast). We picked up a car at the airport (stayed in Brewster), had a week there then drove up to Boston, an easy drive. Dumped the car in Boston and had a few days there (stayed in Back Bay) before flying home. Best holiday ever.

It might be better to consider flying to NYC,,,Train to Boston, very relaxed and scenery on the way, then pick up a hire ,have the Boston bit then hire a car to leave boston, do the coast and cape cod then drop off car at boston airport and fly home..

Another vote for Cape Cod. Chatham is gorgeous and great fun in the summer. It's America at its loveliest ( and most delicious if you like lobster). The Acela Express is an adventure by itself. You can hire a car from Hyannis. Alternatively get a flight NYC- Hyannis and collect a car from the airport.

The Cape Flyer will get you from Boston to Hyannis. Super tourist train running during the holidays. Huge and old fashioned, very comfy.

klobluchar I'm surprised about that. Cape Cod reminds me very much of my childhood holidays in North Norfolk. That's one of the things I like about it. I thought it feels very 'English' as a holiday, just with bandstands, baseball and more reliable weather!
