Mum's 60th Birthday - Holiday to Suit Both Mum and DD Age 3 in June 2020

My mum has kindly decided for her 60th birthday next year she doesn't want a party and would rather take us on lovely. It is down to me to plan this amazing trip for her.

Her birthday is in January, however, she would like to go away when my brother is not at uni doing exams so we agreed mid-June would perfect for the trip.

Any recommendations of where I should be looking that will be great for mum but also with somethings for us to do with DD?

Budget is about £7k-8k for 4 adults (Mum, DH, Dbro and I) and 1 child.

Mum says that one of her favourite holidays was the Florida trip where she loved every moment of us, her children enjoying the rides, the atmosphere of the parks and the shopping. However, I feel that this is a celebration of her reaching her 60th that it should be skewed to her being spoilt and having a great time but without DH and I also having a rubbish time with the toddler.

She doesn't really have any particular hobbies. She likes spas and massages. She likes to rest fall asleep on the sun loungers during past holidays for hours on end and still says it was a lovely restful break . But of course we can’t just do this the whole time. She isn't into museums or art but thoroughly enjoyed visiting the pyramids of Giza and Luxor tombs. So I guess somewhere with a bit of history to explore on a couple of days but not too taxing with a toddler in tow would be ideal. She also likes great food and is always happy to explore. I had amazing food in Thailand on our honeymoon and mum did express interest but I am not sure she would enjoy the temples, jungle treks, swimming in rivers and at waterfall or staying in tree houses that we did with DH when we were there.

We have looked into the cruises like those with Thomson on the Med but we are also mindful of the fact that DD might not be fully potty trained (at age 2 now she is showing absolutely no interest in starting potty training) so wont be allowed in the pools which would be disastrous for DH and I.

Italy is good for food and history and they love children. I loved Venice, Pisa (did leaning tower) but that's just somewhere for a day, Florence was nice but very art museum, Rome is great for history and food with Vatican, Colosseum etc though city like. Loved Amalfi Coast - visited Capri, Pompeii, Mount Vesiovious from there. Sicily enjoyed most of it and excellent food and history - didn't like Palermo but rest was nice esp Taormina. Sardinia is supposed to be nice. Also did Lake Como didn't enjoy that but others do.

We've also done Vineyard Hotel in Cape Town which was nice and could see penguins on beach, Table Mountain, big 5 etc. Did need to take care with safety. Not sure of costs as exchange rate has worsened. Hotel has tropical gardens with giant turtles, food was great, pool and has a spa. I never used spa but rest was lovely. They did organised tours with around 10 people on each or you could hire car. Though one tour a man got on and tour guide said we are all introducing ourselves and he said I'm x, I'm at a governmental conference representing Robert Mugabe, I'm on of his advisors. Shock I asked him if he killed people for a hobby and he laughed, assured me he didn't and said Mugabe is a nice man so we carried on.

It sounds like what you need is a lovely hotel with a pool, a selection of restaurants and perhaps a kids club to give you and your DH a break near to some attractions that you can all visit.

We stayed at the Aphrodite Hills resort near Paphos and I wonder if this might suit you all? There's a hotel there, plus all kinds of villas and apartments. We had a huge villa the second time we visited, which was gorgeous. The hotel looked really nice too and with one toddler that might be better?

The other thing that might work is Thomson Sensatori, which are designed to work for all the generations. My DB and his DW and kids said the one in Crete was lovely, but there are several dotted around the Med. Turkey (Lycian coast), might work well if you mum enjoys a few ancient ruins, as might the Peloponnese peninsula in Greece.

P.S. I see that the hotel in Aphrodite Hills is still owned by Sensatori, it's just called Atlantica, but it's the same chain.

I’d go for a cruise round the med, and not worry about the nappy thing.

Take a look at the Almyra and the Annabelle in Paphos too, if you'd rather be walking distance to attractions and not have to drive.

I would look for an interesting location and then an AI resort with a kids club taking 3 year olds (not all do, check it carefully).

DD loved going around places, obviously not interested in the fine details but we dragged her around stately homes and museums since she was born. I wouldn’t discount taking her if one of you takes care of the child and you swap this duty.
