I'm going to Barcelona for a few days with my 16yo DD soon. We've already scheduled in beach time and the dancing fountains but as we like quirky things rather than mainstream touristy stuff, what else should we check out please?

And any tips for where to eat would be great, we're staying in the gothic quarter.

Thanks very much! Smile

Book well in advance if you want to go in ParkGuell or Sagrada Familia - the entry/tour tickets are limited and sell out fast. We booked a few weeks in advance - there were lots on unhappy people at Park Guell who hadn't pre-booked and trailed up there only to find the limited number of day entry tickets had been sold out (this was mid morning!).

How about the Barcelona Football stadium? We took my soccer mad son and my 80 year old mother - we all enjoyed the tour.

Thanks everyone! Wish we were there for more than 3 days now! I can already sense we'll be back for longer next year...

If you buy the combined ticket for the Sagrada Familia and the Gaudi museum, do you still need to buy the park ticket as well?

Can't recommend this highly enough.

Done this twice, it gives you a really good overview of the area, I would do it early on, even the first night if you can.

Has anyone mentioned the magic fountains, we really enjoyed the light and music show, even if it is touristy , also second a visit to boquera food market off Las ramblas.

I went to Barcelona over the Easter holiday with DH and DDs. We had a great time. I found tripadvisor really helpful for working out what places to see/do.

Although everyone takes on about the pickpocketing and bag snatching we were fine. Just use your normal, sensible, big city precautions as mentioned above.

Definitely book everything you can in advance over the internet to avoid standing in queues. This also means you won't waste time dithering over what to see. When you're there, if there's a new place you want to see, book it with your phone. I saw people outside museums doing this on the spot to beat the queues.

Park Güell (Gaudí spelled it with a k) is actually free but inside it there is a central area which requires tickets as does the house where Gaudí lived until he moved to camp at the Sagrada Familia building site. You can see the central area from outside. We had a picnic in the park and also had tickets for the house which is nice but v. plain compared to other Gaudí buildings

Nearby is Casa Vicens, the first house Gaudí transformed. It's small but incredible and pristine. We also toured La Pedera. Casa Battlo was covered in scaffolding but there are other amazing buildings on the same block. Palau Güell is just off las Ramblas and from there we walked down to the waterfront for great tapas at a café in a floating shopping mall.

We went round the Picasso museum and it's true - when he was young he painted properly and very well.

The metro/buses work well and a T-10 ticket can be shared. Confusingly the Barcelona transport system (renfe) and the national rail system (rodalies) both start with R. You can ride the metro directly from the airport into the centre so don't waste money on a taxi when you only need 1 ride/person on a T-10 ticket.

We also went to the Freixenet winery in Sant-Sadurní d'Anoia which is a short 30min train ride on the rodalies.

I also recommend the tapas auction at El Nacional!

ohcanada · 19/07/2019 14:44

Basically expect to get stuff stolen ridiculous, I've managed almost a decade with nothing being stolen and I don't look Spanish i.e. like a 'tourist'

People love to tell these horror stories about pickpockets in Barcelona but it's rare. I wouldn't leave my bag under my chair on a busy street in any city or town, I also wouldn't wonder around with my bag open or put valuables on tables anywhere. Just don't be an idiot basically.

Pointlessquestions · 19/07/2019 14:45

The food market on las Ramblas was amazing- definitely go there. There was also a fantastic second hand clothes market on the seafront just down from las ramblas- full of some really cool stuff.

We went around an old bullring which was interesting to see and only cheap to go in. Also Sagrada Família at late afternoon- when the light comes in the windows is a must see.

Palace guell to see the roof and the amazing chimneys.

We had some really lovely tapas just on one of the side streets off las ramblas

Eat in this place in the Gothic quarter, bit pricy but like stepping back in time

I got pickpocketed! I always thought surely that'll never happen to me but it did to my shame. I have a grudging respect for how they did it. Actually very skilled criminals

Echobelly · 20/07/2019 02:18

Thanks for these - we're going in month's time, so am taking note. We've already booked tickets for Sagrada Familia - we got cheaper ones for the final two hours of opening in the evening, as we reckoned the kids wouldn't last more than two hours there anyway!

Kazzyhoward · 20/07/2019 08:56

The pick-pocketing is well known - it's been a problem for years. Just make sure you wear clothes (or carry bags) with zipped pockets and inner pockets with flaps/buttons. Most of it is opportunistic, so don't give them the opportunity. Whenever in crowded tourist places I always have a separate "low value" purse/wallet for small purchases (souvenirs, snacks etc) which is the one I will get out in crowded places - if it's snatched whilst I have it in my hand, no great loss. My "real" one with the big notes and cards etc is kept firmly behind a closed zipper inside clothes or a bag, and only sees the light of day in "safe" environments (i.e. inside shops or restaurants) where there are far fewer people around.

ChodeMcwinkle · 20/07/2019 17:44

There is an amazing Kieth Haring mural on the wall behind the museum of contemporary art - might be of interest if your daughter is artsy.

I like the big food Market off las Ramblas as well.

SheWoreBlueVelvet · 21/07/2019 01:04

I find Celta Pulperia a bit greasy but the wine is super cheap.

My best find ( and easy to find ) is Shoko at the end of the beach. Yes it’s a nightclub late at night but it’s bloody marvellous for lunch. Right on the beach and a really good “ meal of the day” which has top notch food. It has lots of Spanish visitors and is cool rather than touristy. It’s too far up the beach for most tourists unless they are staying at the Uber expensive Arts hotel.
I avoid the metro because you can’t see anything. Taxis are cheap - walk all the bits in one area and get a taxi to the next.
The tourist buses are great. Don’t get off early as you’ll struggle to get on. Montjuic is a good stop ( after the Miro stop). There’s a cafe with fabulous views over the city ( rubbish food).
The Colombus statue is fun to go up but also has wine tasting in a smart cellar underneath.

FanSpamTastic · 21/07/2019 01:23

Can highly recommend a restaurant called "honest greens" near Placa da Catalunya - at the top end of las Ramblas. Really good quality food at very reasonable prices.

Nonstoplaundry · 21/07/2019 09:07

Would recommend this science Museum for children- had a really great time here and kids loved it.
But of a trek up there but go early and take your time with the exhibits.
bcnshop.barcelonaturisme.com/shopv3/en/product/325/cosmocaixa-science-museum.html

Re pickpockets, take usual precautions and there’s also lots of police in tourist hotspots keeping an eye.

tarheelbaby · 22/07/2019 13:02

Sagrada Familia - we bought those 'discount' tickets for the evening but I think we were charged full price in the end. There is actually a lot to see including lots of interesting bits displayed in the crypt.

Also, we had booked to go up the Passion Tower but the lift was broken. I later realised I had no proof of this so was not able to claim a refund.

ChicCroissant · 22/07/2019 14:48

We are liking the look of the Science Museum, would make a change from the one in London!

ChicCroissant · 07/08/2019 11:26

Nonstoplaundry thanks for the recommendation for the Science Museum because it was fab! Cheap for adults and free for children, and not trying to chisel more money out of you for everything on the way round! Bit of a trek from the metro (which was also fab to get around on) so our tip if you get off at Penitent is to walk slightly down the hill and cut through the hospital - those two escalators save you one hill walk although there is another one to get to the museum.

Also went round the aquarium (voucher from the McDonalds there for 4 euros off each) and DD fed the fish for 4 euros (squeezy bottle of food) which she liked.

We went round the old gothic cathedral which is quite cheap (about 7 euros each) and you can go up on the roof for a great view although the roof area walkways are small.

Did do the cable cars up Montjuic which also had lovely views, walked around the outside of the fort.

Barceloneta beach was nice, the bit by the nightclubs has toilets and the beach has lifeguards and showers on them.

Unfortunately didn't get to the fountains or Sagrada, but that gives us an excuse to go back!

Head up to the "bunkers" left over from the civil war only the locals go there at night. Take a picnic watch the sunset. The locals take picnics, music and you can see the whole of Barca. It's worth the 20min walk up. www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction_Review-d6612716?m=19905
