Is this for real? He was told that amazing as it is, all the care in the world won't prevent the girls picking up something virulent in the tummy-bug line and that 5 is just too young to risk it. The lady giving the advice travels frequently, but is quite elderly, and childless, so I wouldn't mind some first-hand mummyvision input, thanks?

I was offered a free Muller Lite yoghurt outside T**o last week. The woman lent forward to put it in dd's hand and I snatched her back and barked 'I wouldn't feed my kids that crap in a fit'

Muller folk were stunned.

I digress.

Back to stinky disease ridden foreign climes.

foxinsocks · 28/07/2007 09:24

not that I would advise people not to get them

but the idea that you're somehow immune because you're born there isn't correct

HedTwig · 28/07/2007 09:26

ROFL at moony's muller escapade .. would have loved to have been there

Unhinged???

How so???

Unhinged not to eat Muller Lite???

You need to get out more sweetie.

In any case, was wearing top to toe Boden with lovely shiny straight hair. No long grey plaits, purple tye dye or brillo pad armpits in sight.

harpsichordcarrier · 28/07/2007 09:28

foxinsocks sorry you misunderstand me
I was talking about the possibility of stomach bugs, not hep B etc.

But it's so deliciously easy to do so.......

Right, off to deposit dh at airport.

Will avoid all foreigners whilst there obviously by applying pashmina to muzzle at all times.

"randomly attacking dairy goods"

oh PMSL and ROFL

harpsichordcarrier · 28/07/2007 09:33

jaynehater if you are prone to worry about these things then I think you would not enjoy a holiday in Kerala with your children until they are much older
not everyone gets sick but anecdotally at least it is a pretty common experience and anyway you will spend your whole holiday worrying about it.
personally I think there are some lovely places in Europe Iceland, Norway, whale watching...
and there are some lovely places in the US and Canada
Florida excepted

anorak · 28/07/2007 09:34

Yes harpsi when I went to India I got the runs...my Indian friend reckons she gets them for the first 2-3 weeks of every visit then she is fine. It happens again when she comes back to England. All due to the different microbiological content of the water - she says after 3 weeks your body gets used to it and you are fine.

The problem is that that's the normal length of a holiday...and with small children...

harpsichordcarrier · 28/07/2007 09:35

oh come on, one can be realistic about the chances of getting a bit poorly in Kerala without being xenophobic

jaynehater · 28/07/2007 09:36

Thank you harpsichord. However, I now have ninja yoghurts to add to my pantheon of daily worst-case-scenario worries.....

If I overthink this, Butlins is going to become a viable option.........

aah hc I see what you mean.

Although I had my worst bout of dysentery when I was actually living abroad.

I think it's more that when you live there, you get used to handling the food correctly, which places to avoid etc. and when you are a visitor, you don't have that knowledge and are thus more susceptible.

Foreign milk always upsets my tum (so I just avoid it!).

harpsichordcarrier · 28/07/2007 09:38

yes it also depends on nhow robust your contitution is too.
I mean I have been on holiday with people even to Greece, Spain etc and they haven't pooed for the whole two weeks

belgo · 28/07/2007 09:38

my dd2 gets the runs every time we visit England. From Belgium. Something to do with the water I suspect.

it is sensible to be cautious while travelling with children - I've had some awful bugs that are hard for an adult to fight off.

But as long as you take sensible precautions, and know what to do if they did become ill, then you will probably be fine.

anorak · 28/07/2007 09:39

Oooh don't go to Butlins you'll def get dysentry there...
