What should we see/do in Stockholm?

Have just booked a short break to Stockholm. Staying 3 nights, 4 full days, I'm hoping that's enough time!

We want to see the Abba Museum, what else should we do?

The Vasa, the ship which sunk directly after launching and was restored. A lot better than the Mary Rose, it is huge and absolutely amazing.

Walking through Gamla Stan, the old town is lovely, cobbled streets, lovely buildings.

We did a Schären boats tour and a trip to Birka. Interesting but I weare history mad so it depends how keen you are on these things,

The Junibacken is brilliant, especially the Story Train. It's near to the Vasa so you can combine the two. The Junibacken cafe is really nice.

Thank you, will 4 days be enough? I’d wanted to go for longer but we had other commitments.

The Vasa.

Get out into the archipelago- it’s blissful

I was there in May, and the whole old town seemed to be a building site- it was hard to see anything for big hoardings and rusty fences.
But the ABBA museum was great fun - the kids enjoyed dancing and singing on stage with the ABBA holograms, which is filmed for you and you can download it off their website. You can also sit in the blue jeep from the Mama Mia film, and wear Meryl Streep’s hat while you pose for pics!
We didn’t have time for much more than that and watching the changing of the guard at the palace, as we were on a Baltic cruise with a few hours stopover.

When you go to the ABBA museum / Vasa take a walk around djurgården too - the park is so beautiful.

The natural history museum up by the university is pretty ace too if you want to get out of the city centre. We did a bit of a Tunnelbanan tour where we'd pick a line and a stop to get off at and just explore nearby. The art on the Tunnelbanan itself is worth seeing - some of the stations are amazing!

You must visit the Swedish History Museum. In the basement is a glorious collection of Viking Gold! You have to pass through heavy security gates. It’s just fabulous.

Also visit the Royal Palace. The Ostermalm Market Hall is well worth a visit too and have a look at visitstockholm.com for more advice and ideas. We like Lonely Planet Guides too. We found Stockholm to be very expensive though for eating out. The cafe near the Vasa has great views though!

How much time would you allow for ABBA museum and Vasa?

I loved these allotments in www.dailyscandinavian.com/tanto-stockholms-allotment-garden/ in Södermalm across from the old town.
The city hall is a marvellous building and you can continue walking along past it by the water where there are various cafes etc on pontoons. We walked quite far along and reached a small swimming beach at a park for a nice dip. You can takes boats by the city hall up to the palace at Drottningholm which is rather marvellous.
Do take a trip out to one of the islands in the archipelago.

The Vasa took me half a day, but I ws with a Swded who knew his stuff. He laso gave me a guided tour of the palace (his wife works there!). Eating out was expensive, but paradoxically, Maccy Ds was far cheaper than belgium, and did the apple pies, which they don't do in Belgium.

Gamla Stan is worth a wander around and when we were there the Kings Gardens had a viking fayre on, which was stalls, music, fire eating etc.

I only had 2.5 days, but want to go back again.

BubblesBuddy · 25/07/2019 23:35

About 3-4 hours for the Vasa if you eat there.

badg3r · 26/07/2019 00:02

Ok these are more outdoorsy things given the good weather and not all central but accessible by public transport.

Hagaparken has the Coppet tents, lovely big park where one of the princesses lives and lovely views/walks.

At Ulriksdal you can pick your own fruit and veg and very nice veggie cafe in the garden centre.

Tyresta national park and Hellasgården are lovely too.

Probably already mentioned a lot but Skansen is great. It is right by the ABBA museum and vasa.

Ferry out to Fjardahalmana, Skansen, Abba Museum, Tomtits hands on science museum (out of town so only if you have a car), ethnography museum - great walk down past all the museums - teknologiska museet, nodern art museum, there;s a big telegraph thing in a park you can go up with a cafe at the top, junibacken, grunelund (take the ferry).
