1 week in Iceland in October

Any tips? We’ve got the flights but nothing else sorted so far.

It’ll be me, DH and the DC (8 and 5).

I’m thinking 1 week in Reykjavik will be too long but not sure where else. Or do some of the tours offer overnight stays as part of the trip?

We are happy with all different types of accommodation but like stylish/quirky with character and atmosphere.

All advice and info welcome. Thanks!

There are tours around Iceland that last one week and one is called The Golden Ring. Others go further. It will be fairly cold by Autumn but you would be missing a lot to stay in Reykjavik for a week. Look into booking a tour. Discover the World are reputable. Iceland is expensive and I think your style of hotel might be tricky to find at a reasonable price. I would also buy the Lonely Planet Guide and see what they recommend for 1 week and where to stay.

When we went to Iceland, we stayed in a summer house with its own hot tub just outside Selfoss. We drove into Reykjavik to do a couple of day trips and stayed in Kleflavik the last night before our flight home.
We hired a car for the whole trip and did the Golden circle by ourselves taking two days to do it rather than cramming it in.
We spent quite a bit of time doing perhaps one thing in the morning and then taking my DD swimming in the afternoon. The pools wherever we went were amazing - clean and cheap!! We did Blue Lagoon on the way back to our final night in Kleflavik but we preferred the other swimming pools.

Thanks! Think we are happy to drive, though it’ll be October so start of winter....

An Icelandic friend of mine has been helping another friend of mine put together a trip to Iceland and her advice was that most people visiting Iceland use AirBnB and not leave the Westfjords out like a lot of tourists do. I’ve been many years ago in an October half term, from my experience I’d recommend taking lots of money, warmer clothes than you’ll be wearing in a UK October and take a swimming cap for the Blue Lagoon (whatever minerals are in that water turned my hair to straw!). We did a days pony trekking which was fun.

Definitely do the Blue Lagoon, it is amazing!

We went pre- kids but would love to take them in the future. We went everywhere by bus, it was easy for a couple but I think you would need a car. We took an amazing trip through the centre, was just a scheduled 'bus' trip but was actually on a giant four wheel drive jeep type thing. You have to go horse riding, that is the main thing about Iceland! Icelandic horses are amazing ( I used to work with them so slightly biased!) We found it very expensive but that was 20 years ago so may have changed. There are lots of natural saunas ie hot air vents in the rocks with a shed on top. We did gulfoss and geyser, both great but didn't bother with the blue lagoon, thought it would be too touristy, friends who went recently confirmed this. We stayed in youth hostels which were lovely. Swimming pool s were so cheap and open air with different temperatures, we went a few times as it was lovely. Not sure if it is the right time for the northern lights too, which would be a bonus. There is so much to see, you need to go out of Reykjavik as well. Hope you enjoy it!
