Round trip from Toronto

We have booked London to Toronto return flights for a 10 day break next Spring but have realised that we should have made it a multi-centre holiday so we experience more of Canada (though we will do a little trip to Niagara Falls). We can’t change the flights without losing our money.

Where would be the best place in Canada (not the US) to combine with Toronto? It would be good to find somewhere family friendly which is still a major(ish) Canadian destination. Tia

You can easily take the train up to Ottawa, Montreal, even Quebec from Toronto.

We did Toronto, Ottawa, Quebec and Montreal by train and loved it.

Pressed send too soon- the trains are amazing with food thrown in. We did it all in 10 days too for our honeymoon.

We did Toronto, Lake Huron, Nova Scotia Toronto then home.

Just got back from Toronto airport, it’s not very big with few shops and a very small duty free. Just in case you were considering airport shopping.
Also if you have a long wait before take off, the Air Canada lounge has to be booked at least 24 hours in advance.

Toronto to either Montreal / Ottawa is about 4.5 hours.
Montreal to Ottawa is about 2 hours
Montreal to Quebec City is a bit over 3 hours.
Business Class includes food and drinks and gives you access to the lounges at stations. Always book in advance as they only sell as many tickets as they have seats.

Another vote for Ottawa by train. Walkable city with great museums, Parliament etc.

Don’t pay for a tour to Niagara as you can get there by bus or train. I’d do Montreal over Ottawa - it’s just personal and there are no rights or wrongs as everyone has their own take but I found Ottawa really dull (apologies PP!). Montreal and Quebec are both great, Quebec does feel very European though! You don’t say if you are renting a car? If so, try to get out to Haliburton for a taste of the Canadian outdoors, from (bad!) memory it’s about a 2/3 hour drive.

When we were in Toronto last summer we did a night in Niagara on the Lake which is closer to the Falls. You don't need long there as it's tiny but it's a really pretty little town and, as the name suggests, right on the lake so there are some lovely views. It's very touristy but that didn't put me off just for one night.

We hired a car and went to Niagara for a couple of days and then mainly Ottawa as visiting family. My kids were bored in Ottawa centre, museum of mankind is fab tho. If you like theme parks Canada’s wonderland is great. We also went to a water park called calypso and a safari park called park omega, both a short drive out of Ottawa and were really good days out with kids. Loved Niagara!
