Flight restrictions over Iran

Would you still fly Qatar at the moment?

Are you definetely flying over Iran? And yes I would, I can't imagine Iran would be looking to pick a fight with Qatar - they are both members of various pan Arab alliances and Qatar typically doesn't criticise Iran.

Dirtystreetpie · 26/06/2019 16:35

Yes it would be that route

Ok - while I understand your concerns, the Qatari's are virtually the only nation in the Gulf at the moment who have good relations with the Iranians.Only my opinion but I would have thought the Qatari's are the last people the Iranians would want to seriously upset. Shooting down US drones (if that's what they did do) is one thing, a Qatari passenger jet is another. But it is up to you. I don't think you'd have much hope of getting the cancelled flight cost back though. Go with your but if it's really really worrying you.

SJane48S · 26/06/2019 17:40

Go with your gut not but!

hinely · 26/06/2019 18:03

The Iranians will be extremely careful not to shoot down domestic airliners. I would have no qualms flying, especially with Qatar.

PestoCaffeinisto · 26/06/2019 18:15

Personally I would err on the side of caution & avoid Qatar and Gulf Air, as both are still overflying that airspace.

RainOrSun · 26/06/2019 18:41

Qatar airlines have limited options!
However, their links with Iran are good - indeed when the blockade with Qatar was started by others in tte gulf, it was Iran (and Turkey, I believe) who shipped in fresh food. They also have an excellent safety record that they will not wish to impact - and they were very quick to withdraw routes within the gulf when the blockade started - within 24hrs. I am certain if they believed there was a risk, they would close off the routes.
If I already had flights booked, I would take them. I would probably choose a different airline if I was buying tickets at the monent - more because rebooking if something happened is a massive pita, than the fact I think I would get caught up in anything. Qatar - Iran would be a diplomatic change, rather than a physical one, imo.

Airlines would re-route over any hotspots (Gulf expat here of 12+ years having seen many flares up of conflict in the region over this time) I really wouldn't worry. Flying back to the UK I've never gone the same route twice, lol.

Jellycat1 · 27/06/2019 06:40

Hmm @BlameItOnBianca that's interesting. Also in the Gulf and that's what I thought too! I didn't realize GF were still flying over Iran when others are not. I'm flying GF back to the UK on Sat. I wouldn't be worried about deliberate targeting of passenger planes but I would worry about stray surface to air missiles if we were in the midst of a hot conflict which we're not .... yet.

Mehmum · 27/06/2019 06:54

Go on to the FlightRadar24 app and you can see where the flight paths are. Most of the planes are flying south of Iran now.

Dirtystreetpie · 27/06/2019 09:22

Yeah ours is going right over it, UK to Doha...

Jellycat1 I used to live in Bahrain and regularly used Gulf Air during the time when there was activity relating to the retreat of Iraq & Afghanistan, when the passenger jet was shot down in Egypt, Arab Spring etc.

From what I read, flight MH17, for example, didn't adhere to a safety briefing advising the airline to reconsider it's routes over the disputed Crimean region resulting in that terrible incident.

Qatar Airways are part of the OneWorld alliance group which has BA, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, etc as members. You would assume the group would share intelligence on such briefings across its members and adhere accordingly.

Perhaps I'm just a bit blasé about it all as I live here, but I've never felt unsafe flying to and from the UK, across the world and the region itself, but if you're really unsure OP don't risk it.
